One Bright Shining Moment
So I watched Angel again, I did watch The Girl In Question and it had some funny lines I guess but it's still the worst episode I've seen (yup, it annoys me even more than Billy did.)

Onto Power Play then...

Wow. Very bitty, trying too hard but still wow., in a way For one bright shining moment I almost saw how good this show used to be, and coudl still be. I know there's one episode left (that only really struck me this morning) but there's still time to pull it from the fire.and go out in a blaze of glory.

I was bored around halfway through and went to make coffee, came back and the plot hadn't moved on all that far. The twist wasn't all that much of a twist - sorry guys, saw it coming from before the opening credits - but it gives me a modicum of hope that there's been some point to the whole thing.

Hamilton being more powerful than Illyria bugs me, if thats the only payoff from the power-zapping thingy in TimeBomb then I'm going to revise my opinion of the earlier episode (I liked it a lot). Illyria trying to walk in the world but not knowing why s kinda endearing I guess, the scene with her and Drogan was quite cute, but it's been going on too long now. Resolution people! Or at least move the plot forward a little.

I think that might be my problem with Angel at the moment. It feels like it's treading water instead of fighting against the tide which is what I think the writers are trying to make us feel. Too many plot points, too many stroies, too much left to do and now they're going to solve all that in one fell swoop by having them decide this is a kamikaze mission for that one bright shining moment.

Meh.

I love your new icon!!! I was going to comment when I saw it on your message board but I didn't. Didn't you meet Lilah?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 02:04 am (UTC)
Thanks! I did indeed meet Lilah (and Lee as well) but my scanner was down for a while, I'm going to remake it 'cause I don't like the font I picked (me and fonts - bad mix!) and I'll put that one in as well.
[identity profile] alltherealice.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 02:13 am (UTC)
Your most welcome. At least you have a choice of fonts. I have Arial, comic sans, and new times roman, I have to use arial if I want it to be readable on an icon.

Do you know how to make animated icons? Because that one would look cool all slide showy? And easier to make out the people in the back.

It's quite spiffy though.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 02:16 am (UTC)
Oooo, I didn't think about making it animated! That could be a little project for me this afternoon! (I'm off work today - yay for flexi-time!)

Right now I'm considering spring-cleaning and trying to sort out the plot line for "Happy in a land of us" in my head - my Andrew story! So fingers crossed I'll get all that out of the way and I can play about with icons for a while - I've been too busy to do it recently, two icons in over a month. What happened to the days when I'd six a day?! *grin*
[identity profile] alltherealice.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 02:22 am (UTC)
I've missed your icons! Good luck with finishing the boring house stuff (I have to do that stuff tomorrow today, because my nephews coming down and apparently clean dishes are a necessity) so that they came make a come back. Yay for the Andrew story progress!

Roll on the days of the Jetsons with self-cleaning stuff, I hate housework and tend to avoid it like the plague!

Been meaning to say since I first spotted it - love that icon! Is that from the baseball game thing he did in Chicago? (not into sports at all ('cept Rugby Union!) so I've no real conception of how big that would have been)
[identity profile] alltherealice.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 02:47 am (UTC)
It surely is! It showed up in my email from the Lindsey group and I had to give it a try. Surprisingly enough to me it didn't suck.

I don't follow sports much, but it looked pretty packed in the background of the pic. So pretty big. The only sports I even occasionally follow are the AZ Diamondbacks, baseballs the only sport I can stomach, and I stick to liking my home team.

It was all rather OTT, in GiQ - the Italian W&H head was particularly annoying. But it was quite funny in a slapstick sort of way, and the 'move on' message was a good one in the context.

Power Play... I was totally misdirected, I'm afraid! I really believed Angel had gone evil. Silly me. Was all quite chilling. And some very good lines. I see what you mean about Illyria though - although her individual scenes are always great, and her dialogue, they haven't moved her story on much.

Well, looks like it's gearing up for an apocalyptic finish.

Oh, and how about the huge bones they're throwing to the A/S 'shippers? End of GiQ, sitting next to each other 'moving on' - they just so wanted to grab hold of each other and 'move on' there and then! And then Spike's comment in PP, "Angel and I have never been intimate. Well, except that one..." Which almost makes A/S canon rather than slash, which I suppose sort of spoils the fun a bit.

I actually went off on a mini-rant to myself at that annoying woman's pronuciation of "andiamo" - the 'd' and 'i' roll together to make a 'jeh' sound rather than pronouncing each letter individually the way she did. What's really scary about my mini-rant is I was talking to the dog in Italian for about an hour after that. *grin*

I wonder if by making A/S canon would lead to a reduction in A/S fic? Probably not...

You can speak Italian? Thats kinda hot.

I liked the the head of W&H Rome, I thought she was amusing. I think I may be too afraid of her breasts to say anything bad about her.

I wonder if by making A/S canon would lead to a reduction in A/S fic?

Oh how I wish that canon would make ships disapear. Just think... No Spuffy.

That would be a good great day.

Tell me that's not frightening.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 06:36 am (UTC)
ROFLMAO!

Yes, that is scary, and silicon. (miaow!)

Yup, I speak a few languages and can read quite a few more as well. It's one of my annoying talents that I do absolutely nothing with. I've always been pretty good at picking up languages - any romance language I can get a working knowledge of within a couple of weeks since the basic rules are pretty similar. Germanic languages are a bit different (although strangely being Scottish helps a lot with that!) and Scandinavian is a complete enigma to me - but I get the feeling if I went there and was immersed in the language I'd get by.
[identity profile] alltherealice.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 06:43 am (UTC)
I'm so jealous! I took two trimesters of German and managed to pick up an astounding nothing (But technically I didn't try very hard, it was a requsite and I didn't want to take Spanish.) I can count to 15 in spanish though.

It must be because I'm American we're stupid and refuse to learn any language other than American (Which is English, only a lot less literate FYI) (Thats the wrong word. Which only serves to prove my point.) :)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 06:47 am (UTC)
LOL! I know what you mean though.
[identity profile] alltherealice.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 07:03 am (UTC)
It's true! Would you believe that I just found out tonight that it was cupboard and not cuboard

Because I did.

I'm lame I know.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 07:09 am (UTC)
I think it was George Bernard Shaw who once said "Britain and America - two countries divided by a common language."

Very true. *grin*

One question - what do you have against the letter 'u' on that side of the Atlantic? (as in favour, colour and so on) It's something I've always wondered.
[identity profile] alltherealice.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2004 07:45 am (UTC)
I think we're just lazy. The way it's pronounced though, you would think that the 'o' should have been left out instead of the 'u'

Because Color and flavor are more 'u' sounding words, like fur or sure. If Color looks like it should be pronounced colore.

I've never really thought about it before.

Handy talent! Job-getting talent. I think it's still the case that the Brits are by and large so crap with languages that having one or more gives you currency in jobs that involve dealing with people overseas.

Don't know so much about the other Scands, but I gather they're similar - but Swedish is extremely easy. (And Scots certainly helps). I only didn't learn much because I'm lazy and it was too easy not to. The only difficult thing is the pronunciation, because they have extra vowels (a with two dots, o with two dots, a with a circle), and some of the consonants go soft in the presence of certain vowels. (So it's Sven Yeuhran Ericsson for example, not Goran). But the grammar is piss easy, the sentence structure is pretty straightforward (no trailing verbs like German), and a lot of the vocab is quite recognisable.

On the other hand, as there's only about 8 million Swedes, and all of them under the age of 60 speak English, there's really not much reason to learn it most of the time.
