looking for a little website help

Not coding really, although if anyone has a really quick five minute tutorial that'll save me spending three weeks learning php then I'll happily take that kind of help!

No, what I'm looking for right now is some suggestions for the look on Moments Lost. I've run through several themes for it so far, TruFaith (Eliza Dushku), Not Fade Away (dedicated to the finale of AtS), Anything But Ordinary (Nick Brendon), and the current one which isn't named and I've grown to hate.

Moments Lost is currently home to INAP, the WKA, a forthcoming Faith/Xander archive, a forthcoming Firefly site and by this weekend I will have the Stacks (general BtVS info) and the Archives (general AtS info) transferred over as well. Plus I have a music site which is housed on that server (or will be once I have some content there!) There is obviously a Whedon dominance on the site which explains the choice of themes so far. I'm happy to keep up with that to be honest but I'm also a little bored with the way it looks right now.

So, my question is this - what would you like to see? Graphics wise, layout wise, content wise. Give me links to sites you like, tell me what you don't like, anything. Even if you know nothing about web design you instinctively know what you like - tell me what that is and I'll see if 1) I agree, and 2) I can do it.

Cheers!

Slight Reservation
First of all, I must say I love the website as it it, its wonderful. How about having a Xander wav play in the background when you first enter the INAP site. It's easy enough to do, hell if I can do it, anyone can.

Another idea would be a challenges page, you know, I would like to see Xander crossover with this program, etc, etc.

However, one slight worry. You open up a general Xander site like INAP and add a sister FX site, aren't BXers going to start they don't have their own part? Others too, but BXers just seem to moan more other shippers.

Re: Slight Reservation
It's possible I suppose, but I think so long as there is a clear distinction between INAP and the FX site I don't think it would be too much of a problem.

The .wav file idea is a good one - I've been considering doing a splash screen for entry into the site itself and that would be the place for that I think - any ideas for dialogue to use? (I have a few in mind already, I'm just intrigued as to what others think would work)

Challenges. Yup, no problem at all - I'll add a category for them tonight!

Re: Slight Reservation
FX? You know how argumentive some Xander fans can be. If you run a general Xander site you should be impartial, blah, blah.

wav files? How about Xander's confrontation with Angelus? His duel with Jack O' Toole? Or his talk with Dawn when she discovers she isn't a Potential?

Challenges? Cool, I need more plot bunnies.

Not.

Re: Slight Reservation
I'll need to check with Kaz, but I know she ran a Xandrew site (Inner Geekdom) alongside the original INAP without complaint (except when she also ran the Linoleum Awards and slash stories won - there were comments that they were rigged because of that. They weren't.)

But hey, I've also written BX (although I'm an FXer through and through) so I could always do that as well... *grin*

and LOL at the plot bunnies - I think I would need to avoid the challenge section personally because it's gotten to the stage where I can't watch a new show or listen to any music withoug automatically finding the fic in there... Hell, I even have a BtVS/Ultraviolet cross over in the works now!

Re: Slight Reservation
Yes, I remember the storm over 2003's Xander awards. I tended to agree with the arguments that Xander wasn't gay but it's slightly pathetic, it's not like there was money, fame, or publishing contracts wrapped up in it.

NOOOOOOOO! DOn't write BX anything but! Spander is way cooler (goes to take a shower).

Okay, so my bias is showing through now. Not like it's a secret.

Ultraviolet was a cool show.

Re: Slight Reservation
Damn straight Ultraviolet was a great show - although I'm glad they never managed to get the US version running, I think it would have been ruined personally.

BX fic, yup, written/writing one - What a Difference a Day Makes. I'm not sure quite where that particular inclination came from! I like it, it's fun to write something so different for me.

Re: Slight Reservation
DIfferent? You want different? Write FX fluff, a comedy piece, some W\X, C\X, D\X, K\X. Just don't become a follower of evil!

Seriously though, I can understand your burning desire to change your website, I keep looking at mine and thinking I should jazz it up some.

If I could only get over that kick-ass fear of completely destroying the damn thing.

Re: Slight Reservation
Always save the files to your hard hard drive - that way if it breaks, you can always upload the originals again and everything will be back to normal.

I made the mistake of not backing up files once and lost about a month's worth of work - never again!

Did I forget my acute laziness when it comes to web design? Give me a word processor or database any day.
