Getting to know you meme...
Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip - this should be interesting! (I promise to answer as honestly as possible!)

This is the problem with LJ, we all think we are so close, and we know nothing about each other. I'm going to rectify it. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about.
Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

:)

What's your favorite color?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on November 10th, 2004 07:22 pm (UTC)
Oooo - a difficult one to start! Nice!

Midnight blue.

I think, sometimes it's maroon, sometime's it's dark green. Whatever, it's always a really rich colour.

*shrug* said I'd be honest didn't I?

HMMM. There's a lot I don't know about you. What to ask?

Who's your favorite writer?

oh so many to list!

The one I read most often is Pratchett, closely followed by Gaiman.

However, I would probably go with Orwell or HG Wells for the ones who I actually feel I'm getting something other than pure enjoyment from.

Orwell, huh? I'm not a huge fan of 1984, but I found Animal Farm quite worthwhile and philosophically sound! I think it's a much better work than 1984, by far! And it's one of my oldest friend's favorite books of all time!

As to Wells, I remember being quite intrigued by his works, but I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read him since I was 10 or 11!!! I shall have to go back and read him again!

My dad was, amongst many other things, a strong advocate of literacy. I was reading Wells and Huxley when I was nine. Orwell, he let me stumble across on my own and I was just blown away with every single thing I've read of his. 1984 is an odd one, it has a lot of resonance with me but I think a lot of that might be due to the insular themes going on in the book - the fact that Britian is called "Airstrip One" has a huge impact when the US at the time I read the book, were using UK bases as potential launching points for US ICBMs. There was even a US submarine/naval base within spitting distance of where I grew up (I was near the Holy Loch).

I guess it was a right time, right place deal with me when I read 1984 and it's probably my favourite Orwell book.

Now you see, that gives me a different perspective on 1984! I can definitely see where it would resonate for you! That's why I love discussing books with people! It gives me a chance to see the work through their eyes and not just my own! I may go back and reread 1984 and try and filter it through what you just told me and see if that gives me a different take on it!

My job title is "Senior Library Assistant, Electronic Journals and Current Awareness" so it's easier to say I'm a librarian.

I also have a side business as web designer which I have been paid for so that counts as well I think.

When was the moment you realised you weren't just a fan of BtVS, but fanatical about it?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on November 11th, 2004 02:39 pm (UTC)
Oh, now that's a difficult one actually. There's a lot of times. Dec 30th 1998 when I ignored my own birthday cake for two hours to watch the first screening of WttH/Harvest. The moment I discovered the JossBTVS yahoo group, the day I signed onto the BBC cult forums. The day I came back to the BBC Cult forums after a certain Cardelia chased me away on my first trip... *grin*

Probably though, the first sign of fatanatiscm (sp?) was when I set up the first mailing list which was the forerunner of the BBB.

Who inspires you the most?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on November 12th, 2004 08:57 am (UTC)
Y'know, I really can't pin it down to one person.

My dad, who always taught me to go after what I believe in and never to negate anyone elses opinions just because they aren't my own.

Paul Robeson. A man who had to fight his way through life, who was discriminated against because he was black, who had his passport taken from him because he refused to answer the question "Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party" posed by the House Un-American Activities Committee. He spoke a multitude of languages, was a star athlete, a qualified lawyer, an incredible singer and actor, he fought against apartheid in South Africa, he was a staunch supporter of the Civil Rights movement in the States, he fought for human rights across the world, he was an incredible man. And yet he's not really known for his accomplishments because for eight years he wasn't able to leave the USA.

For a more modern answer... Joss Whedon. In a way. I think. Sometimes I hate him, sometimes I really admire him. It's swings and roundabouts.

In fanfic terms, I've said this countless times and I'm happy to say it again. [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs
