so another weekend over and realistically it was the last chance to get much shopping done before the Christmas rush hits with a vengeance...

so of course I didn't really get all that much done.

*grin*

I did manage to take back my Sunday though, before my sister moved down to my village I used to get up early on Sundays, read the papers, have a proper breakfast, maybe do some cooking and be out of the house by 12 to do whatever I wanted to do - shopping, running, whatever. Since she moved down I've still been getting up early but making the mistake of calling her at 10ish to see if she wanted to go with me. Invariably she did and I'd end up kicking about killing time till I went up to her place, then killing time until 3pm, putting up with her "the roads are really busy, I wonder why?" comments every week and then rushing about and never getting what it was I was going for in the first place.

Yesterday? I didn't call her. Selfish of me? Probably, but damn it felt good!

Of course, once I got home, I felt guilty and went up to her place anyway where I spent most of the afternoon holding up the over-large Christmas tree her idiot boyfriend had bought (8 foot tall, for inside the house, when the stand they had was only for up to 7 foot....) while she flapped around trying to anchor it to the wall using a bit of string...

*sigh* families, who'd have 'em?

You should go on a 'Reclaim your Sunday' demonstration march.

:)

*grin*

yeah, me and Dram marching up the streets of the village...

Yep, Dram with a wee tartan collar on with 'reclaim your sunday' stitched into it and you with your homemade placard and your foghorn.

:)

A tartan collar on a Westie? How stereotypical...

Nah, he's got a good sturdy brown leather collar. I'd have to make him a little jacket or something with it printed on it...

And can you imagine me waking up the neighbours with a foghorn at 8am on Sundays? *grin*

Hey, at least you'd get them all united behind something. Just a pity it'd be uniting behind driving you out of the village, but at least you'll have united them behind a common cause.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2004 10:54 am (UTC)
Oh they're already united in a cause, it's the "let's all walk past Sho's garden and say loudly 'her mother would never have let it get into that state'" cause....

*grin*

Didn't you have somebody that was gonna come in and tidy your garden up for you? Was it the same person who was gonna fix your gate? Or have they not come back yet?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2004 11:01 am (UTC)
this would be the friend of my sister's boyfriend who showed up once this year and never came back.

so yeah, my garden's now at the state where anyone joking about using a flamethrower on it wouldn't be laughed at...
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2004 11:05 am (UTC)
So that flamethrower I got for christmas last year could get used after all.

:)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2004 11:10 am (UTC)
I don't think I want to know why you got a flame-thrower for Christmas last year....

*g*
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2004 11:15 am (UTC)
It's so that I could use that line. *grins* And is your garden really that bad? And if you want any help with it just holler.

:)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2004 11:17 am (UTC)
Yup, it is that bad. I'm letting it all die down a little just now and then when I'm off over Christmas break I plan on taking an axe to the lot of it.

*grin*

Well, not the (and I use the term laughingly here) lawn of course, cause that would be silly.

Thanks!

Maybe you should put a sign in the garden:

"The owner of this house leaves for work at ** am and returns at ** pm. This secures her income - which is good for food, mortgage repayments and the like. The time spent at work and travelling to and from work means that it would be unreasonable to expect the the owner to spend time 'gardening' during the week.

The weekend consists of 48 hours. As you can tell from the owner's working week, she needs to spend some of this attempting to catch up on sleep (at least 16 hours for the 8 hours a night recommended by most doctors). Several hours, at least 3, are also used in the process of getting up and getting ready for bed. Time is also needed to do important things like shop for necessities such as food. (It would be unreasonable for her to do without, although this does seem to occur frequently in the case of breakfast.)

At the weekend shopping for essentials takes longer because it's busier, so we should allow 3 hours for this (to include travel and shopping time). Shopping for other items, particularly at this time of year, may also be required, so another 5 hours should be allocated to this on a just in case basis.

Usually the owner of this house spends Sunday helping her family, which can take approximately 6 - 7 hours. Because the owner spends much of her week at work, some of the weekend is used to do essential internal maintenance taking approximately 3 hours. The welfare of the owner's dog is very important to her, so she does spend time walking him, we should probably allocate at least 2 hours to this.

The owner of the house only has 12 hours left in her weekend, and no time has been dedicated to the preparation or eating of meals yet as well as all the other little bits and pieces that are part of day-to-day life! Furthermore, to maintain her sanity, she should aim to see or at least speak to one person who is not a member of her family over the weekend. With only 12 hours left and so much to do, the chances of the owner having any time/energy to deal with the garden are slim.

Get over it!

If it bothers you that much, help her instead of wasting valuable time moaning about it!"

Ok, so putting a sign up may not be a way to make friends and influence neighbours, but thinking about it may make you feel better!

*hugs*

Beck.

(And no, not calling your sister in the morning was not selfish - you need to have some time to yourself to do your stuff. And if she needed you, she has a phone which she could have used!)

Can you tell I'm in a confrontational/argumentative mood this morning?*bg*

Beck.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2004 11:28 am (UTC)
*hugs* you right back!

that is brilliant! I should print that out, laminate it, and stick it to the front gate!

Lol at Beck

Nah, like Beck says, not selfish. If you phone her every week, it probably gives her the impression that this is how you want to spend all your Sundays.

Families can be great, and from where I'm sitting it would be nice be able to spend more time with mine than I can. But you need your own time as well, especially with how hectic your week is, with the commute n'all. The worst thing would be to spend so much time with your sister's family, out of some sense of obligation, that you start resenting them.
