hey, a non-work rant update!
Catching up - [livejournal.com profile] engelsteorra I hope it all went really well yesterday and I'll be keeping everything crossed for you!

[livejournal.com profile] dimlondeiel - hiya! Welcome to LJ

[livejournal.com profile] rileysaplank still no further with the FO banner yet, I will have another look tonight but it may be the weekend before it's done now.

Everyone else. Thank you. I was only checking emails yesterday intermittently so I haven't really responded to any comments yet. Your thoughts and comments were very touching and much appreciated.

I'm getting back into the swing of things on [livejournal.com profile] _end_of_days after my extended leave of absence in December - Sam, Emmy and I completed a scene last night which was a lot of fun to be part of - and I'm getting excited about it again.

One of my first ports of call when I started to get into online fandom was the BBC cult TV boards. I just found yesterday that they're closing down at the end of next month. I haven't posted there for a good few years now but it's kinda sad to see one of the first forums I called home go. I guess it does go to show how far the BBC scheduling is leaning away from Cult tv now. I made a lot of good friends via that forum, I interviewed for a job on the website (I didn't get it - they decided after interview that they couldn't take on anyone else), it was a good source of information and updates. And now it's going. *sigh*

Edit I *knew* there was something else I had worry about today - looks like we have another plagiarist on INAP. I've taken the story down and contacted the author but not yet heard back from them. And this in the same month that I noticed the original plagiarist had made a return to the site with a different user name and apparently original stories. *sigh again*

Okay, Sho, no worries about waiting til the weekend, just whenever you can. Also, I've tried clicking on dimlondiel and it just says there's no such LJ user so you've possibly got the spelling wrong.

I'm glad you're getting back into the swing of things on _end_of_days.

As for the BBC boards, I never really posted there long enough to call it home, for me home was always the BBB. That's the only Buffy group I've ever really posted to and, this is no way intended just to boost your ego, I think I wouldn't any friendlier than it is.

Ooops. Missed an 'e' - sorry Laura!

Ditto there Andy, I posted for a couple of weeks but everyone was talking about the BBB so I joined and the rest, as they say, is history.

Ah well, back to the grindstone.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 04:11 am (UTC)
I think I need to get the BBB kick-started again, I was hoping that when Lost started airing that people would start discussing that but since that's been delayed till the Summer there's not much chance of that right now. And Point Pleasant doesn't really appeal to me (after ranting about her for years why would I voluntarily watch a Marti Noxon show?) so even if people want to talk about it I have no way of moderating it.

Maybe I should start the topics again, I never did go back to the beginning the way I was going to do.

Grrrrrrrsssss at C4 (notice how everyone has now started referring to the channel by the name of an explosive, I wonder why?). I'll have to try and think of ways that we as posters can get things kick started as well. We shouldn't have to wait for a lead from you.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 04:24 am (UTC)
*g* well, that might help...
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 04:31 am (UTC)
I don't understand Fanfiction plagiarism. I mean I understand why people do it in RL. They plagiarise a story because they want to get some financial gain, they plagiarise somebody else's coursework because they want to get a better grade. But Fanfiction. What possible benefit could they gain from it. We, as writers, know that no matter how many people read our fics, there are very few people who feel moved enough to actually leave a review, and even then it's 50/50 as to whether you're going to get a good review or not. And I can't see how you'd get any pleasure from seeing people review one of 'your' stories when you know it's not you they're complimenting.

This particular case is a bit of a grey area as well, unlke the previous one where I could see at a glnace that entire sections were lifted from anotherstory, in this case it's more like the odd sentence here and there, and the overall plot. There's a limit to the number of stories out there, I know this (hell, I studied Russian Formalism for a while - Vladimir Propp claimed there was only actually 7 possible stories in total) but in this case it's very clear that the newer writer had read the original story and written it again themselves. Is that plagiarism? Is it a tribute to the original author that someone was so intrigued by the story they wanted to have a go at it?

Whatever the case, it was done without consent and the original author is the one who complained to me so I have to take action based on that.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 04:48 am (UTC)
That is a grey area. If they'd just lifted the plotline and written their own take on it, then that can't be seen as plagiarism. As you've said Vladimir Propp claimed there were only 7 total possible stories, it's also been said that there is only 7 possible different jokes (I take it it's taken from the same source as the 7 stories).

I know with poetry and Lyrics anything more than two recognisable lines is plagiarism. With music, 5 or more recognisable notes is plagiarism. With stories, I'm not sure. I'd say it depends on th length of the story. As a general rule I'd say maybe 5 or more recognisable sentances. But that's just my opinion, yu've gotta go by your own judgement in each case.

I took the story down straight away because I'm going to adopt a zero tolerance standpoint for that kind of thing, but I've also emailed the author informing them of why the story was removed and inviting them to get in touch with me.

Hopefully I can get this sorted out without too much bad feeling.

Thanks for the welcome, Sho :) I'm still trying to get the hang of LJ atm, like how to link to someone else's LJ account?

I'm conflicted over the BBC message boards demise. On the one hand, it was the first place that I posted and I made some friends there. On the other hand, I haven't posted there for ages because it became really bad over the summer with the same topics being repeated over and over again and some really irritating posters. Most of the regs have moved to the Cult tv message board at http://s7.invisionfree.com/Cult_TV_Boards/index.php?act=idx.

I hope yesterday wasn't too hard for you Sho :(

To link to someone else's account, I take you mean to be able to read someone's LJ. If so, then as long as you know the LJ name of the person it's quite easy. All you have to do is search for that name, and then in their LJ user info there should be a person Icon with a plus on it, click that to add them to your friends list. Then to read their journals all you have to do is click on your friends list.

I want to put a link to the creator of the icons I'm using in the keywords, how do I do that?
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 07:40 am (UTC)
Okay use (lj user="Iconmakersname") but use the < tags rather than (.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 07:43 am (UTC)
Ignore Andy, he's talking through a hole in his head (:p) http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=mara_sho is a page showing all my icons and my keywords - I tend to give them a summary then a hyphen then the iconers name - so there's "engravings - catatonic..." (bad example I forgot the numbers, but d'you see what I mean?)
[identity profile] dimlondeiel.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 07:50 am (UTC)
Yay, I got it to work. Thanks to both of you :)
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 07:54 am (UTC)
Yeah Sho, but that's not LINKING to the creator of the icons, that's giving the creator credit within the icon, so there.

*sticks tongue out*

*grins*
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 07:58 am (UTC)
yes but most iconers don't ask you to link to them in keywords, just to acknowledge them. So :p
[identity profile] dimlondeiel.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 08:03 am (UTC)
Now, now children. Play nice ;)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 08:09 am (UTC)
*g* this is Andy playing nice. Me? I'm on the wind up because I'm bored working throught lists so I'm happy to wind him up...
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 08:35 am (UTC)
Yep definately playing nice. You should see me when I'm not. I go this strange purple colour.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 08:43 am (UTC)
And if you weren't playing nice you'd go off on a random tangent and de-friend me instantly.

Oh sorry, that's someone else isn't it? *g*
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 08:48 am (UTC)
You're saying I'm crazy, right that's it, I'm de-friending you. And I thought we were friends as well.

*grins*

I notice he's still updating at INAP even though he asked you to remove his stories.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 08:50 am (UTC)
I asked him not to make a knee-jerk decision about INAP because it would be a shame if his stories weren't archived there. He seems to have agreed to that which is good.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 08:54 am (UTC)
It is. I've never read any of his stories but he does seem to have a few fans.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on January 27th, 2005 09:03 am (UTC)
Yeah, sorry. Misread. *kicks self*
