Silly work thing...
I work in a University library, most of you know this by now but just in case you didn't - yes, I am the she-Giles. Right now I'm maintaining the 10,000 plus electronic journals we currently subscribe to (which sounds dead interesting but really isn't) as well as other things. Most of our subscriptions come through one agent, the reason behind that is that it's supposed to make for less admin work on our end and it's meant to be cheaper (essentially we're bulk buying from them.)

Since I started in the library we've caused four customer service reps at that agents to quit their jobs through stress and/or nervous breakdowns. We're not that mean to them - honest, we're nice people (well I am anyway!). We just want things done the way they should be.

Start of this year, when the fourth contact disappeared, we were told we'd have a dedicated helpdesk team to coordinate with us so that the work load is shared across a bunch of people. Fair enough - we've always said it's too much work for one person. Since then I've only ever had contact with one person from that helpdesk and it looks like she's doing it all herself which is a bit of a shame really.

Anyway, I just got a reply from her about a problem we have with a journal and I think I can see the first signs of cracking on her part...

Yikes.

Our library is going to get a reputation for being nightmare customers but we really aren't, honest!

It's you isn't it? That's where you let your nasty side out, and it's causing all tese people to quit their jobs. Bad Sho.

I have no nasty side!

No, I'm nice to them - honest!

Not quite she-Giles. He wouldn't have anything to do with those infernal contraptions.

Besides the point.

They wouldn't have so many problems if it was all done the right way to begin with.

Heh! Well, there's no getting away from these infernal machines in modern libraries unfortunately. I do kinda agree with Giles' point though - I actually first considered going into librarianship because of the public library in St Andrews. It had a research area with glass fronted bookcases, huge long tables and deep leather chairs. Your typical old-fashioned library in other words. And as soon as you walked into that section you could smell the knowledge in the books.

Sounds weird I know, but it's the best way to describe it.

Now? The library I work in has 13 floors and most of them are designed with this nasty turquoise and white colour scheme and pcs as far as the eye can see. It's not a library any more, it's an information centre.

*sigh*

I sound old now don't I?

And yes, absolutely, if the agent did their job properly in the first place then they wouldn't have all this problem with stress. As for them handling all the admin details so we don't have to? Yeah right!

No, I know what you mean. I love my books. And I love buying new books just for the smell. I got to go to the library of Congress once as a kid, so I know that smell you're talking about. 'Tis wonderful.

I love the smell of old books, that musty smell you get from them. *grins*

Glad I don't sound like a complete library geek then and that you understand where I'm coming from. I mean don't get me wrong, computers have a huge impact in and for libraries - making content available onlineis a huge bonus, but that's what it should be. A bonus. I dread the day when online content replaces the printed word and given my role in the library (Senior Library Assistant for Electronic Journals) that sounds so wrong coming from me, but it's how I feel. Which I actually think makes me uniquely qualified to do what I do - my understanding of the nature of online content and my abhorrance of the prospect of its relegating the printed word to the dustbin of history means I can balance out the pros and cons of ejournals.

Good grief, why didn't I say that in my presentation the other day? That almost sounded intelligent!

That....is an excellent point.

I have been known to make them from time to time...
