new layout for ML!
So I'm now incredibly bored with being at home and spent today designing a new layout for my main site Moments Lost. I'm going to do a lot more work on it over the next couple of days including redefining exactly where everything is on that site. I just thought I'd show off the graphics work I did so :P

I'd love to know what you guys think of it!

*grins* I like it.

really? I was concerned it ended up being a little too... pink really!

Ooo, I have a question for you - now you have your own site, do you still want a page on ML? You kinda do right now but the links are actually broken on it at the moment... sorry!
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:04 am (UTC)
I don't really need a page on ML, so if you want the space for something else just use it. I can't even remember saying I'd want a page on ML, but knowing my memory.

it was way way way back when I started the site, I asked everyone on the 'fic list if they wanted a page dedicated to their fics and everyone I archived at that point said yeah.

That's cool though, like I say I'm doing some major redefining of the site now (including setting up a dedicated icons/graphics subsite) so it may end up that outwith the redesign of the Fic site itself (which I'll be moving over to my server soon) no one will have their own page. 'Cept me. 'Cause it's my site. *g*

I will be adding a links page though - including an affiliates page, wanna be affiliates? *g*
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:09 am (UTC)
Oohhhhh, Uhuh. *bounces* Will have to try and figure out how to put affiliates up on my site, so I can do the same for you. (Though I think most people who are going to visit my site would already know about yours).
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:12 am (UTC)
Cool! You'll need to get Missy to make you a button (or hey, make one yourself!) so I can pimp it!
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:15 am (UTC)
I'm gonna see if I can "obtain" a copy of a decent graphics programme, so I might be able to make one myself.

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:17 am (UTC)
you can download 'Gimp' for free actually. It's pretty good and is open source so there's no dodgy legalities. http://www.gimp.org/ is where you can find it. I've used it once and then I got Photoshop so I'm no expert in it but I've seen the results of others who are and they're bloody good.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:46 am (UTC)
Downloaded it, now just have to figure how to put Images into it to get working on them and I'll be away.

*grins*
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:50 am (UTC)
Yay! Can't wait to see what you come up with now!
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:58 am (UTC)
It'll probably be after the weekend before I get anything off to you as I'm trying to figure everything out at the minute. What kind of dimensions are buttons usually?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:03 am (UTC)
depends really, 100x50 are the ones I tend to make but some people think they're a little on the large side. 100x35 actually works better for some people - check out http://www.moments-lost.co.uk/mljoined.html for the various sizes. Right click on any picture and click on 'properties' - that'll show you the sizes of each button.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:08 am (UTC)
The 100*35 ones actually look a bit small, so I'll probably make it 100*50.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:13 am (UTC)
I much prefer the larger buttons myself. (and yes I did have to go back and add the word 'buttons' there...)

Thank you! That is such a compliment! I have to admit - it's actually your icon that prompted this design, I kept seeing it and trying to come up with a way to use the image and this ended up being the result. I'm getting happier with it by the minute now!

Ha! OT3 would've been funny to see the reactions!

And since I almost wrote W/X the other day (and still might, although I'm just now remembering the outline for that was on my laptop *headdesk*) then the picture from WSWB may just feature in another update at some point...

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 10:56 am (UTC)
The problem with that WSWB picture is that the original image is pretty poor quality

Very true - however, there could be a theme here. Maybe a whole old photographs theme - and suddenly it now has a name. Pointless Nostalgic. ('Photographs lost in time are all I see, a pointless nostalgic - that's me') Dammit! (just kidding about the dammit - I'm actually quite intrigued by the possibilities of the layout now.)

This new layout'll stay for a while, maybe up until I buckle down and get some more writing done.

And, yay, W/X! Write it! You know you want to... :)

I kinda do actually, and what's weird is it's a season seven plot bunny which is just... random!

Good to know you'd like to read it since if it does get written it'll be dedicated to you. (It was hearing about your injury that kinda got my head going in that direction in the first place...)

I now have to write this fic don't I? :)

ah well, it's not like I'm busy at work or anything right now... *g*

I'm usually one of the first in my office as well, and since I hate my job and really don't care if I get the sack... I could well end up writing most of this in the office - would not be the first time. Most of my one shot fics were written at work.

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:51 am (UTC)
heh - and the fact that it's ten to eight in the evening and I've got a sick line off work until Monday doesn't affect that at all....

*g*
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:09 am (UTC)
You're considering writing W/X?

*faints in shock*
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:12 am (UTC)
I am indeed. Season seven W/X no less.

:D
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:16 am (UTC)
Oooohhhhh. That'll be interesting, especially if you're keeping it canon and Willow is 'gay now'.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:22 am (UTC)
It'll start off in canon anyway, but Willow, in my opinion, was never gay. I personally don't believe in labels like 'gay' or 'straight' or 'bi' - to say that Willow is (and by extension always has been) gay is to negate her relationship with Oz - and yes, her long-term attraction to Xander.

On a personal level I'd say Willow is just like most girls her age (and yes I'm including me in my late teens/early twenties) - she's attracted to people regardless of gender. In my least favourite episode ever she actually says "It wasn't women. It was a woman." - she loved Tara and through her need to define herself at the time that led her to the conclusion that she was gay.

Okay, before I get controversial and offend anyone I'll leave it there. (but that will be dealt with in this fic which I'm now going to have to write amn't I?)
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:27 am (UTC)
Yep, you are gonna have to write it. And agree with you. The evidence of Willow's actions and later comments, completely contradict the "gay now" comment, but that's not to say she didn't love Tara, or even the Brat.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:36 am (UTC)
Absolutely, although I'd be hesitant to say what she had with Kennedy was 'love' - she was a necessary 'moving on' girlfriend who helped Willow remember that it was possible to let go. There are too many problems evident in their future for it to be love - seriously, apart from apparently being the only two women who liked sex with other women, what do they have in common?!

Willow loved (and was in love with) Tara, that I have no doubt over. I also think she loved (and was in love with) Oz - and potentially could again in the future. But then, I'm not writing a WOz fic am I? I'm writing a W/X one... Yeah, I am writing it now. (well, not physically right at this moment, but it will be started soon!)
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:38 am (UTC)
Hehehehehe. Yep.

*starts thinking about possible post season seven WOz fics*

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:42 am (UTC)
Hey, Vienna is a nice city isn't it? You could write a Willow fic in Vienna and have Oz be there...

maybe "Where the Wild Roses Grow" could feature as well?

See how easy it'd be to do a BBBFic challenge fic? *g*
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:45 am (UTC)
You're determined that you want me to enter a story into that challenge aren't you? Doesn't mater that I don't really know any of the cities or the songs does it?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:49 am (UTC)
I don't know any of the cities either - I've travelled a lot through Europe and I've not been to any of them.

And I only know about seven of the songs as well. The five I suggested I know, and a couple of Bill's I know (WtWRG is one of his which I'd love to get hold of, Nick Cave and Kylie in her indie phase? perfect!). You don't need to actually use the song - just work the title in somewhere. And hey, didn't I just give you a pure gift with the Snow Patrol one? (We can run away now they're all dead and gone). The Gdansk one I already entered, all I know about Gdansk is that there's shipyards and an industrial area - still managed to write a fic around it...
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 11:54 am (UTC)
I'm actually getting inklings of an idea. When was it decided that the deadline would be?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 12:10 pm (UTC)
it was never actually decided. I'm gonna say end of the month though. I should check with Bill first of all but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he'll be okay with that.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 12:12 pm (UTC)
I'll have ot done before then I think. Especially considering I've already started writing it.

*grins*
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 12:18 pm (UTC)
Yay! Another entry! Very cool! (btw, CC is a major character in this week's Charmed....)
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 12:21 pm (UTC)
Will watch it on plus, even though I've never watched a single episode before, as I'm watching Time Team at the mo.

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 12:23 pm (UTC)
Oh she just said the perfect line - "Okay, okay, so I wouldn't actually have a soul but... I can live with that."

ROFLOL!!!!
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 12:26 pm (UTC)
Hehehehehehe. Charmed definately owes a lot to BtVS.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 12:32 pm (UTC)
I have a scribble pad that [livejournal.com profile] smileawhile gave me for Christmas which I tend to note down plot bunnies on - that quote just got added...

And OMG yeah - the whole Cole=Angel storyline was too bloody obvious! Just found out that Cole is going to be making a re-appearance btw - some kinda special episode, and given that he was killed on the 100th it'd have to be - I'll definitely be looking forward to that!
[identity profile] smhwpf.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 03:44 pm (UTC)
Interesting! Very nice graphics, with an unusual style for Buffy. Like the effect of the different overlaid images. Yes, that hidden image in the middle when you enter is very clever, need to look at it a few times, just who is it? Very sharp colours, kinda jumps out at you. Marvelling at just how many gazillions of icons you've made! I'm not sure how much I like having just that small window in the middle for the content, but it serves the purpose of keeping you in the one place while letting you open windows for the fics and sites and so forth.

Good stuff!
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 10th, 2005 04:09 pm (UTC)
the iFrame (the little window) is going to be one of the first things that changes - I hate the feeling that it constrains the site in a way, obviously from a web design perspective I need to have it contained within the page, but that little block just annoys me!

Did you notice by the way, that although it's the same image I used on the front page and the inside of the site it's actually flipped so the character in 'negative' is actually a different character between the two images?

I was concerned that the overall colouring was a little pink, and also that the skin tones seemed a little too yellow. I'm gettin gused to it now though and the colouring seems to sit better with me now.

(thanks btw!)
