Can I be Welsh today?
So I love rugby, have done since I watched my first match with my dad way back when. One thing I really want to do is see a Calcutta Cup game at Murrayfield and for Scotland to trounce 'em! (not gonna happen for a while I think, not until we actually start getting some kinda cohesion in the national team but hey, that's beside the point) to explain - Calcutta Cup is the Six Nations game between Scotland and England

Today is the final day of the Six Nations Championship. It's halftime in the Wales/Ireland game, both teams I fully support so long as they're not playing Scotland, but today... if Ireland beat Wales by more than 16 points they will win the championship. If Wales win they will win the championship and will also get their first Grand Slam for thirty years.

Much as I love Ireland, I'm fully behind Wales right now.

The score at half time? 16:6 to Wales.

So, for today, can I be Welsh?

sorry [livejournal.com profile] bob_bobbing, if it wasn't for the Grand Slam I'd probably be supporting Ireland...

Current Music: the crowd at Millenium Stadium, Cardiff...

Can I be Irish then?

I hope they manage to win, but I would sneakily like Wales to get the Grand Slam.

Heh! You can't have it both ways though. And hey 22-6? Wales are going to have to do somethign really stupid to lose it now!

Spoilsport. I do think Wales will win, and as I'm 'technically' British (I was born on British soil abroad) I should support the three British teams against Ireland.

And I thought that was an Irish try there.

LOL!!!! Did you just see that 'tussle' there? "Greco-Roman"?!! WTF?!
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 08:48 am (UTC)
Greco-Roman wrestling. Have you never heard of it or just expleting unnecessarily?

Good bit of refereeing on it though.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 08:49 am (UTC)
I knew what they were referring to - that wasn't Greco-Roman wrestling, that was trying to kncok lumps out of the other guy! I agree, good refereeing though, the ref's been good all game actually.

And another try & conversion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!

I don't think Ireland can score 33 points and stop Wales from scoring any in the last 20 minutes somehow.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 08:54 am (UTC)
It is possible, not likely the way Wales are playing right now, but possible...

What's the Welsh national anthem? Can I just sing a 'Phonics song and that'll do? (They were on Radio 2 this afternoon and had to bolt out of the studio to catch the start of the game)

The Welsh national anthem:-

Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.

Cytgan

Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd i mi.

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwald tan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ac erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

And an English Translation:-

The Land Of My Fathers

The land of my fathers, the land of my choice,
The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice;
The land whose stern warriors were true to the core,
While bleeding for freedom of yore.

Chorus

Wales! Wales! fav'rite land of Wales!
While sea her wall, may naught befall
To mar the old language of Wales.

Old mountainous Cambria, the Eden of bards,
Each hill and each valley, excite my regards;
To the ears of her patriots how charming still seems
The music that flows in her streams.

My country tho' crushed by a hostile array,
The language of Cambria lives out to this day;
The muse has eluded the traitors' foul knives,
The harp of my country survives.

Heh! Thanks!

Y'know, now that Ireland are picking up the game I'm kinda wanting them to win...

I'm fickle.

*g*

Five and a half minutes to score twice, could happen.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:07 am (UTC)
Specially if they stay that close to the line....
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:08 am (UTC)
Wales put in though.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:09 am (UTC)
lot of injury time to play from the first half. Still possible.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:10 am (UTC)
Could now. I'd like to see Ireland win, but I'd like Wales to get the Grand Slam. Can't I just have that?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:11 am (UTC)
'fraid not.

line judge was definitely wrong there.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:12 am (UTC)
Definately. I think time's run out for Ireland unless the ref allows a lot of time for injuries.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:14 am (UTC)

Wales won!
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:18 am (UTC)
I do tend to support Wales if they're not playing Scotland simply because whenever the Scotland v. Wales game gets played we have a lot of Welsh people staying in Bathgate as we have a direct rail link to Edinburgh and it's relatively cheap.

Outside our local Butchers we have one of those life size plastic Butchers, with a couple of smaller ones that have slots in the top to put money in for charity. Every year the Welsh are here those three plastic buthers disappear and are seen at the game. When they come back the two smaller ones are usually full to brimming with change, which helps the local charities a lot.

Rugby fans are the best. There were loads of shots of the crowd during the game and there was no clear de-lineation between the fans. Obviously since they were in Wales there was a lot of red shirts, but there were plenty green shirts sitting side by side with them.

There's not many sports you see that in.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 09:53 am (UTC)
No, there isn't. I think (not totally positive on this though) that in the Football world cup in '98, for the Scotland v. Brazil match Fifa actually said that there could be mixing of the fans, but security officials vetoed it and said they wanted clear de-lineation just in case.
[identity profile] bob-bobbing.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2005 02:21 pm (UTC)
Well, you are both forgiven for cheering for Wales today :-)
They deserved the win and the championship. Their fans are always great craic and completely nuts but there is never a hint of trouble so if we weren't able to win the Grand Slam I am glad they have!

Can only imagine the party going on down in Wales tonight!
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on March 21st, 2005 04:27 am (UTC)
:)

It's odd but as soon as Ireland really started to pick up the game in the second half I was really hoping they might manage it. Ah well, like you say - I'm glad Wales won!
