that bands meme thing & a question
everyone's doing it so who am I to rock the boat?

Here's the bands/singers - you guess the song of theirs that's my favourite

** are for bands I couldn't decide on one favourite so I have two.. (oh and one of the 'phonics ones? I will be absolutely stunned if anyone gets it)

Stereophonics ** - Thousand Trees (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] engelsteorra) still one to go!
U2 ** - I Will Follow (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (still one more to guess!)
Kane - Spirit Boy (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] emeraldswan)
Muse
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dimlondeiel)
The Killers
Jamie Cullum
Natasha Beddingfield
Deacon Blue - Dignity (kinda guessed by [livejournal.com profile] rileysaplank
Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dimlondeiel)
KT Tunstall
REM - Nightswimming (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] invisionary)
Ocean Colour Scene
Snow Patrol ** - Chocolate (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] engelsteorra) still another one!
Lost Prophets - Burn Burn (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dimlondeiel)
Ultravox - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip)
Pearl Jam
Tori Amos
Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] rileysaplank)
Divine Comedy - the Certainty of Chance (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] engelsteorra

The question

Completely and utterly unrelated to the meme, I'm in the process of setting up round two of the White Knight Awards and having learnt a lot from last time around I'm cutting the categories way back. And here's where I'd like your opinions... Some of the individual pairings ended up with only two fics in each category so I was thinking of reducing it all down to "Conventional" and "Unconventional" but therein lies a problem - does Faith count as a conventional pairing for Xander? Should I further split unconventional pairings into het and slash since I know there will be arguments if I don't?

Gonna guess. :)

Jamie Cullum: Pointless Nostalgic
Kane: Spirit Boy, Rattlesnake Smile, In the Darkness (is that even the right title?)

How are you?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 12:50 am (UTC)
I almost put Pointless Nostalgic in as my second favourite but decided against it at the last minure.

Spirit Boy's right (and again, In The Darkness was a close second (why yes, I was listening to it when I named [livejournal.com profile] _inthedarkness *g*)

I'm feeling... tired right now. My sister was in a car crash last night, she's fine and the kids are fine (well, she has a fractured sternum - thank God for seatbelts - and my nephew has a nasty bruise where his seatbelt pinned him back, but they're okay) I spent most of last night waiting in the A&E department of the local hospital to make sure everything was okay.
[identity profile] emeraldswan.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 12:54 am (UTC)
Oh my goodness! I'm glad they're okay, even if they do have bumps and bruises to deal with. That's much better than any alternative I can think of.

Heh. I just realized it's three am here. I should go to bed...

Talk to you later!
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 12:55 am (UTC)
Hee - go! sleep! And thank you.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 07:43 am (UTC)
That's good then. I've been worrying all day, hoping no-one was too seriously hurt.

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:02 am (UTC)
They've taken my sister back in for more treatment. Her lung's collapsed and they need to re-inflate it. Everyone seems positive about it though.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:03 am (UTC)
Eeehhh, that's not too good then. I hope she's okay.

I also think a seperate award for each 'ship is a good idea. If a certain pairing doesn't get a lot of nominations/votes that's probably better than a not-so-good fic with a popular pairing winning over an amazing fic with an unpopular pairing. Such is the dark and fickle underbelly of the fanfiction voting community. Xander/Spike will probably overrun the whole thing if you don't split up the pairings. :p

I do have to admit to being a little surprised at some of the winners last time. There were a few stories that were just so mind bogglingly good that they should have decimated all competition. But hey, that's how awards usually go. I tend to think that if it isn't the Nobel Prize, it's probably more than a little skewed by who is the most popular, rather than who is actually "the best."

I agree in principle but on the other hand there are categories which, to the best of my knowledge, have had very little or no new fics posted since the last round. Those are the ones which only had two or three nominees anyway they may end up with no new nominations.

Possibly what I could do is at the nominations stage leave it completely open for 'ship fics and then when I compile the nominations to be ready for voting split them at that stage into further categories.

For example - say I get 30 nominations for het pairings (random number - hopefully there will be a lot more than that!). Ten of those are Xander/Buffy, ten are Xander/Faith, five are Xander/Willow, two are for Xander/Anya, two are for Xander/Dawn and one is for Xander/Cordy. From that I'd probably end up with four voting categories - Buffy, Faith, Willow and 'other'. With the same being the case for slash fics.

That would mean the person nominating would have to provide the pairing as well as a link to the fic...

Hmmm, okay I'm actually mulling this over in my head as I type - it could well be the way to go.

Nightswimming's right, Black was one of the tracks I considered but it's not the one I ended up with!

Nope for the guesses, and thanks for the good wishes. Looks like she's going to be okay now.
[identity profile] dimlondeiel.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 02:33 am (UTC)
I'm so sorry to hear about the accident, and am very glad that they are OK :)
Again with the random guesses :)

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 03:12 am (UTC)
Thanks - everyone's as okay as can be expected I guess and that's the main thing. :)

You got three right - Take Me Out, Oh My God and Burn Burn

Hope you made it in time to meet your friend!
[identity profile] cafedemonde.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 06:26 am (UTC)
Muse - Hysteria
Green Day - Paradise
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 07:59 am (UTC)
nope. Sorry! wanna try again?
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 07:42 am (UTC)
Jamie Cullum - What a difference a day makes (Actually not sure if he's done that or not)

Natasha Bedingfield - These Words

Deacon Blue - Ship called Liberty

Ultravox - Vienna

U2 - Where the streets have no Name and Still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Green Day - Time of your Life

Divine Comedy - The Frog Prince(ess?) or National Express

I would guess at the Snow Patrol one but the songs I had of theirs were another thing I forgot to save when I re-set my computer.

Ohhh, wasn't Grazed Knees a Snow Patrol song? If so, that's what I'm guessing.

You've got two halves. The song titles are wrong but you've got the right song for Deacon Blue and Green Day - want to guess again or will I just tell you?

[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:02 am (UTC)
See I'm terrible with titles, so if I guessed again I'd probably still get them wrong.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:03 am (UTC)
The Deacon Blue is "Dignity" (I almost got really picky with that one but I knew what you meant) and the Green Day one is actualy called "Good Riddance (time of your life)"
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:05 am (UTC)
That was a mental blank on my part for the Deacon Blue song, I meant dignity (thought I had written dignity in fact) but for some reason wrote liberty instead.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:06 am (UTC)
Though thought what I'd written out for the rest of it was actually part of the title.
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:08 am (UTC)
U2 - Sunday, bloody Sunday.

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:08 am (UTC)
nope.

:P
[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:16 am (UTC)
Stereophonics - As long as we beat the English.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:17 am (UTC)
LOL - no, 'cause I've never actually heard that one. Nope, both the 'phonics songs are on albums and one was a single. (In fact, if memory serves, it may have been their first single - definitely one of the first)
[identity profile] willowmina.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:52 am (UTC)
Um... Jamie Cullum - What a difference a day makes? Divine comedy - National Express? Something in the Wood Shed? (I don't know if that's the title or not.

Probably not right though.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:55 am (UTC)
Sorry, but no. :(
[identity profile] willowmina.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 10:18 am (UTC)
Ah well, ne'er mind.

*shrugs*

*wanders off to read yet more transcripts*

Tori Amos- Cornflake Girl, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Baker Baker

Gabrielle
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 08:58 am (UTC)
Ultravox - Dancing... is right. And you're the first person to get the album right for one of the U2 ones (and no, I'm not saying which is it. *g*)
[identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com on April 2nd, 2005 09:21 am (UTC)
YAY! I got one right! I am so excited!!!

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on April 5th, 2005 12:20 am (UTC)
You got three. But then with the number of guesses you made that's hardly surprising is it? *g*

"Thousand Trees" for one of the 'phonics ones - because it rocks and still sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it.

"Chocolate" for one of the Snow Patrol ones - I love every song on Final Straw but the reason this one stands out is because of the video.

"Certainty of Chance" for Divine Comedy - I love how dark it is which is why it won out over Gin Soaked Boy.
