WKA Update - important
This happened last year as well but I let it slide because it was only one or two people who did it. This year, however, the number hit double digits so I'm going to do something about it.

Using the tag and linking to a picture on someone else's website is bandwidth theft, whether that person is paying for their web hosting or not. Since I am paying for web hosting, this is ultimatlely costing me money and - probably more important for you guys - runs the risk of hitting my bandwidth limit and taking all my sites - including INAP - offline. (I don't mean people loading the images onto photobucket etc and 'linking' back to WKA, that's fine. It's just the people who are using

I understand completely that some of you might not have your own webpace but still want to show off your banners. If that's the case, please let me know before the end of today because I'm about to change the addresses of the banners so that anyone hotlinking to them is going to get broken images by tonight. Once that's done, I'll be implementing a randomiser which will periodically change the address of the images so that this doesn't happen again.

What I will do for people who need it - and who ask me - is set up stable locations in a folder no one else will know about it.

If you ask me, I'll probably say yes.

Sorry!

That's not a problem - I don't have a problem if people I know and consider friends do it, so long as they ask me. It's when I'm randomly surfing through nominees I've never heard of before and find they're the ones doing it - that's what pisses me off.

that would annoy me if that was happening to me. Especially with a service like Photobucket being available.

Exactly - there are so many free image hosts out there. Hell half of the people I saw doing it had paid LJ accounts so can use LiveJournal to host the pictures if they didn't want to sign up for anything else.

I know some people genuinly don't realise they're costing people money by doing it - which is why I'm giving a day's notice before I make any changes. (I'm also going to be randomising the locations on my graphics site as well although I've not seen anyone hotlinking to that yet - the [livejournal.com profile] zeppo_stillness blanks are going to stay where they are though - that's not linked to from anywhere but within the community so that's fine with me. Speaking of, can I set the times for the next challenge for 10pm BST (which is eight hours ahead of you I think, so that would make it 2pm your time? Seems the best compromise)

Sure sounds good to me. I will comment about that when I post the voting up tomorrow.

Don't forget to screen comments when you do the challenge.

Will do - and thanks!

Did you want me to get you any caps in particular for the challenge?

I think I'm covered, I've got a bunch of my own on my home PC and I can make more if I need them. Thanks though!

OK that's great to know.

With the amount of space you get for free on Photobucket there's no reason for people to need to hotlink.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and just changing the address. Other people I know who have had their graphics hotlinked have a specifc image they replace it with. Usually that image is HUUUUUGE and says something like "I'm a fucking thief!" in very large red letters so that it screws up the hotlinker's site (and if they're on a free host which monitor's 'adult' content can sometimes get them banned)

You are far too nice.

Heh - not something I'm accused off very often!
