RotS - I liked it. But.
Didn't expect it to be the best film ever, it had some real problems but the set pieces and most of the action sequences were cool.

From Rebel Dawn by AC Crispin:

"Even Wookies never went down all the way to Kashyyk's surface. There were rumored to be night-crawlers down there that feasted on the blood and spirits of their victims. It was said that the spirits of those who had not honored their debts sank down to the surface, and prowled there, ready and waiting to trap and kill anyone foolish enough to come near them.
There were reputedly seven levels of distinct ecology on Kashyyk, with the seventh level being the topmost tree branches. Normally, not even the bravest Wookies ever descended below the fourth level, and even Wookie legend did not speculate on what lay belowthat. No one that Chewbacca had ever known had walked on the actual surface of his world. The bottom-most levels of Kashykk were a mystery ... and would likely remain so."

And in Timothy Zahn's Heir To The Empire trilogy there's mention of Leia suffering extreme vertigo when she peers over the edge of a platform because she can't see the ground of Kashyyk.

So how come there was a beach? How come there was sand? Normally it wouldn't bug me but Lucas exerts such control over the books that you'd think he'd maybe know about something as basic as that! Or maybe he just decided it was worth pissing off the fans of the books in order to have the cool submersible fighter thingies.

That said - I did like it. It's not and never will be a classic, I think he managed to pull it out of the fire - but it's badly burned.

The walk away did bother me a lot actually, but by that point I'd kinda switched off my brain because it was too busy pointing out things like "this is blocked in the exact same was as scene x from Empire" and "ooo this is lifted from the NJO books".

The speed at which Anakin capitulated after seeing Windu killed bothered me a little. He was all "What have I done? I'm a horrible person!" and then two seconds later, "Who cares?" - I was harbouring a tiny hope that maybe Lucas was subtle enough to pull off the doomed attempt at the double cross from Anakin. As in, giving the impression he was siding with Palpatine to learn what he thought he needed to know but then been sucked in further than he realized until he couldn't get out. But no, maybe George thought he'd shown that enough in the farcical first two films to bother here.

Absolute worst moment of the film: "Master Skywalker, there are too many of them. What should we do?" - god love you son, but the first thing to do is go to a drama class or two! I figure that kid was in there to make HC look less wooden (although he was actually not too bad this time around!)

Anakin's reaction was almost enough to bring me into the character - up until that point it was still just HC playing a role, but there I almost suspended disbelief. But as you say - the very next scene any struggle with his concience was gone and he was slaughtering kids. And why were they 'Younglings'? I get Yoda calling them that but Obi Wan did it as well - they're kids, or children, or Padewans (and I just bet that's not the plural!) not 'younglings'!

Yoda's speech pattern was irritating as well, in ESB it was quaint and interesting, in RotJ it was tragic, in PM and AotC it was mildly irritating but in RotS it was just downright stupid!

I knew there was something else bugging me about the Kashyyk scenes, but I couldn't quite place it, and didn't car enough about the film to think about it, but that's what it was.

You really didn't like the film, huh?

Not really, no. It probably was the best out of the three (though that's not saying much). It just never sucked me into the Star Wars world, plus the fact that I know Ewan McGregor is a far, far, better actor than he was in this movie, but the script he had to work with had some of the most ridiculous dialogue I've ever heard from a movie.

Oh by this point I think Ewan was just in to ham it up completely! I did like his little quirks where he was mimicing Alec Guinesses movements and expressions - that made me think that he was using it as an acting excerise rather than a serious role.

He can be much, much better, but he can also be a lot worse. I don't think he was 'phoning it in' here, unlike say... Natalie Portman (who can also be a great performer), but it definitely will not be the role that marks him out as a great actor. But then, it was the same for Alec Guiness as well - not the best performance of his career but it's the most instantly recognisable.

If I remember rightly Ewan was quite vocal about not liking filming against Green screen in the first two movies, so I think even he never considered this to be a great role, just a very visible one.
