grrrr
So the really helpful people at Buenna Vista entertainment finally got back to me about using promotional materials from Lost in the Library's Freshers' Far.

They're not going to let us use the official stuff unless Channel 4 agree to cover the Fair itself which I doubt is going to happen.

Crap. Crap. Crap.

So that basically leaves us with the other option which was suggeted after the meeting - the Jungle Book. I have to say WTF?!!! The Freshers' Fair is for new students at the Uni. The youngest of them is going to 17. They don't give a crap about the Jungle Book!! They're not seven!

I did have a word with the woman and ask if there was a way we could allude to the show without using official merch and her answer was that if we did they would be in a position to legislate (not legislate - I meant litigate!) but they probably wouldn't because it's a non-profit organization (and that was off the record)

*sigh* [livejournal.com profile] engelsteorra, we need to come up with something fast before we end up wearing Bear or gorrilla costumes...

How very, very nice of them. No, we don't want you to promote our show unless you're going to get national TV coverage.

I understand that they want to get as many viewers as possible, and that getting national TV coverage would do that, but surely it would be better if they let things like Libraries promote the show on a local level as well as their TV advertising.

After all, Librarians are a very powerful bunch once they all get together. Just ask Micheal Moore.

*grins*

The woman was really nice and I do get where she was coming from. It's just frustrating because we're not doing it to make money, we're doing it to help students get through Uni without bailing out (or succumbing to vampire attacks - but that's a different story...). The only thing is we're not actually helping them make money either so there's very little in it for them on the surface. Of course, the fact that we'd be bringing the show to an audience of around 15000 people who may or not be aware of it at that point didn't seem to register.

I do have another avenue to try though so all is not lost yet (pun intended)

Yay for the road less travelled. Lost would be a great tool for freshers as a lot of them can actually feel lost and like they're on a desert island with no hope of escape, so it's a great pun.

And you'd think they'd want as much promotion as possible, I'm assuming you're not asking for much merchandise from them, and for a target audience of 15000 I'm assuming that the money they'd spend on advertising to that many people would be a lot more.

Having not seen any Lost yet I don't know what handle you'll be using, but I imagine the students would be more up for that than the Jungle Book.*g*

I can't really help at all, (well, I'm in a difficult mood!), but on a different theme could you find a way to use a catchy phrase like 'Find serenity in the library' in your publicising?;)

Subtle, huh? *beg*

LOL! Now that would just be the ultimate in guerrila marketing for Serenity!

Oh how I wish we could...

(now scrambling to come up with ideas for how to incorporate it into the campaign...)

You poor baby! Somehow, I can't see you enjoying life in a monkey suit!

God I hope the monkey suit thing doesn't come to pass - of course now I've said it I bet it happens!

(still, it's probably better than the 'Suck It And See' t-shirt from last year!)

"Suck it and See"?

I don't think I wanna know... (but check out my icon)

Oh come on! The Jungle Book is way cool!
Everyone knows and loves the Jungle Book. I will not hear a word against it :-p
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on June 2nd, 2005 12:18 pm (UTC)
Not saying anything against it at all - it's just so not the right thing for the target audience. :P
[identity profile] bob-bobbing.livejournal.com on June 2nd, 2005 12:49 pm (UTC)
Fine but I am huffing as the Jungle Book is one of my favourite films :-)

Always meant to ask as well, do you need a matric card to get in Glasgow Uni Library or can anyone just wander in?
Always just fancied a wander round.

You do need a pass to get in but you can either ask for a day pass at the front door or ask to get in to see the European Documentation Centre publications - we get funding for that on the condition that we let anyone who wants to see them get access. Or you could say you're looking for me and they'll either call me down to the desk or buzz you through. :)

Might give you a shout the next free day I have then...

Jungle Book? I'd relate better to Lost (or anything culty or otherwise that has been on TV lately) than to the Jungle Book. And the possibility of having to hang around freshers fair in animal costumes is scary.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on June 2nd, 2005 01:28 pm (UTC)
I have no clue why they're fixating on this Jungle Book thing - it makes no sense to me at all. Like I said to Conor there, I've nothing against the book at all it's just so not the target audience.

Okay, here is something you might be able to do. Buena Vista says you can't do it unles Channel four says they'll cover the event. Does it have to be a specific Channel 4? Meaning did she say for instance WJTV Channel four has to cover or did she ASSUME it would be XYZ? If she didn't go into specifics become a self employed Sho Channel Four Television Staion rent a video camera, make up press cards and film the fair.

It's all in the wording baby. :D
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on June 3rd, 2005 01:31 am (UTC)
hehehe - would be good except she did clarify it was definitely this channel four (http://www.channel4.com) she meant. I'm going to compile some promo material over the weekend using stock images which will allude to the show without being blatant so hopefully we can still go with the Lost theme. Which of course means no monkey costumes!
