Spam, spam, spam spam, spam, spam, spam spam.
I'm kinda bored now... And my pov for the next part of CR shifted on me mid sentence so I'm taking a tiny break before I go back and hack it to bits. In the meantime I'm spamming my flist with absolutely nothing other than a great lyric.

I didn't hear cheerleading
for creative writing

Heh! I personally think that is a great line. (Idlewild - Century after Century in case you're interested.)

'Kay, I have a question for fic writers out there - what's your preferred medium? Computer or paper? Does it matter? Personally it depends on the fic - WaDaDM is primarily a paper fic, a specific notebook which is horribly close to being full which may explain why I'm finding it not so easy to get the next part written - what'll I do when I have to get a new notepad for it? Will it be the same story? CR started as a paper fic but kinda moves from one to the other - the Faith segments tend to be done on the computer while the Xander parts are done on a notepad (not a specific one though - any scrap piece of paper'll do!) in writing that doesn't really look like anything else I write. Huh, should I worry about that? Maybe I have another personality in my head who can only express itself through writing...

THE SPARROWS ARE FLYING.....

(bonus points if you get that reference and will happily admit to it!)

Okay, enough with the procrastination - must get back to writing... Or George will. *g*

writing medium
It really depends on where I am trying to write.

If I am writing outside of my house, I prefer paper & pen. If I am writing at home, I generally perfer the computer.

I always write word specific fics on the computer (ie drabble challenges that have to be 100 words or fics for 15 minute ficlets).

If I am writing original fiction, I do tend to perfer writing it on paper and pen first. And if I start a series on paper, I like to finish it on paper.

Re: writing medium
I guess I'm kinda of strange, in that I vary so much - sometimes it's all paper, sometimes it's all on my PC, sometimes it's on my laptop (Off Course is one I can only write on my laptop, I'm really not sure why but when I try it on any other medium I just end up with so many blank pages.)

Re: writing medium
I found that once I started writing series fanfiction, I started to be like that. If I start a series on the computer or laptop or paper, I prefer to finish it that way. It becomes difficult if I vary the medium.

I note canon plot details that are relevant to what I'm writing and graphic things like floorplans and unusual writing systems (eg, ogham). Sure, I could do those on the GIMP, but I'm not that hardcore. Everything else, I draft and revise at the keyboard.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:30 am (UTC)
Wow - that's actually ultra-organized compared to anything I do! I start off with these grand intentions of having everything mapped out, having a specific plan to follow but it never quite works out that way!
[identity profile] smhwpf.livejournal.com on September 4th, 2005 09:02 am (UTC)
Almost always computer. Sometimes I'll scribble down stuff on paper, but only when I haven't got computer access. Partly because my handwriting is so bad (and has got worse since I started using a computer as my main medium).

Perhaps I should buy you a new notebook especially for the next part of WaDaDM... *g*
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:32 am (UTC)
*grin* I actually have a scary number of notebooks in the house which I bought with the aim of being the next WaDaDM notebook but none of them feel quite right. The one I'm using at the moment was a Christmas present a few years back from Gil of all people, and I've never been able to find another like it again. *sigh*

I write on the computer only! But that's for some odd and personal emotional and psychological reasons I won't bore anyone with.

I have this little memory of me sitting on the fourth step up on the stairwell in the house I grew up in with a notepad in my hand and writing with a fountain pen using Quink ink. I guess that's why I tend to have an emotional connection to writing free hand, unfortunately my handwriting at age ten was never great - at age 30 it's all but illegible to anyone other than me!
[identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 08:10 am (UTC)
That's rather a lovely little vision, actually!

Computer only. Save the trees. Ok, my handwriting sucks. *g*
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:34 am (UTC)
See my handwriting is so bad that only I can read it - and even then I struggle a lot of the time.
[identity profile] bastardsnow.livejournal.com on September 4th, 2005 10:12 am (UTC)
I tend to write fic on the computer, just about anything else on pen and paper.

Not that I write much else, anymore, now I'm out of college...
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:36 am (UTC)
I think I may have been the opposite - all my coursework was done on the computer while everything else was done free hand. Huh. 'Course when I was at university computers weren't as pervasive as they are now - my entire course had to share seven Apple Macs between us all! (And I'm taking the old grey square things - we were *really* excited when we got two PowerMacs in my final year... God I feel old!)

Pen and paper for the first draft, then edit it while I'm putting it on to the computer before sending it off to the beta (if I'm using one for that particular story) then editing again when I get it back from the beta. That's for most stories. Drabbles depend on what's handy at the time, if I'm sitting in front of the computer that's what I'll use, but for everything else I prefer using paper first.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:38 am (UTC)
That actually seems closest to the model I use for most non-specific stories I guess. There's also the added thing I do when I have a story demanding to get out as quickly as possible - because I type a lot faster than I write (I'm around 55-60 wpm which aint bad for someone who's not employed as a typist) I quite often move from writing free hand to typing halfway through.

I waste so much paper - I tend to use spiral bound A4 notepads and only write on one side so that I can do all my editing on the opposite page. And then of course when I go to type it up I change it as I'm typing, then print it out double-spaced and go over it with a red pen.

I'm a one-woman ecological disaster area!
[identity profile] emeraldswan.livejournal.com on September 4th, 2005 10:27 am (UTC)
Both. If I'm blocked on something, I usually try writing it out on paper. And I usually start new stories on paper. The problem with that is that it sometimes takes me forever to get it from the paper to the computer.

And . . . The sparrows are flying brings to mind a Stephen King book. Don't know if that's what you're thinking of or not, but the book's called The Dark Half, I think.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:44 am (UTC)
Okay, further proof that we share a brain!

And you're the only one who got the Dark Half reference - have a virtual cookie! *g*

Sometimes, I'll carry a fully-written scene around in my mind for hours until I get the chance to post it. But I don't use paper that much. My formative years have left me with horrible hand-writing and it's less fun that typing anyway.

As mediums go then, I have my brain (yes it qualifies!), the PC-that-ate-my-cat and this portable that's so old it has arthritis. And a French keyboard. And hardly any letters left on the keys. And I'm in the middle of writing the next part of Broken on it :)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:46 am (UTC)
Okay, now I really hate you. I usually have inspiration strikes when I'm someplace I can't write anything down - like when I'm driving for example - and by the time I get to a computer or a piece of paper it's gone. *g*
[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 03:18 am (UTC)
This might be a wee overboard for fanfic but Stephen King says writers should carry a tape recorder (or similar) around. One never knows when the muse will strike.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 03:51 am (UTC)
I did actually do that for a while, but then I hit a dry period where I couldn't write anything and I fell out of the habit of carrying my dictaphone. Might have to start again!
[identity profile] gumboy.livejournal.com on September 4th, 2005 07:48 pm (UTC)
POS Laptop that was heading toward the recycle bin seems to be medium lately. I've also scratched out ideas on a memopad, a placemat and during one particular boring training session, I wrote an entire third act on a blackberry. I think my thumbs still haven't recovered from that.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 5th, 2005 12:47 am (UTC)
*giggles*

I just have this image of everything around you being covered in writing by the end of the day!

Hi Mara, wandered over here from nemo's LJ.

If I could work up the courage to write, it would definitely be on paper first, there's something comforting about pen and paper

With my user name couldn't help but notice the "sparrows are flying" comment - isn't it from The Dark Half - Mr King is a very twisted man...
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on September 9th, 2005 12:31 am (UTC)
There really is something very satisfying to see ink gradually fill up a blank page that you just don't get with pixels on a screen. :)

And I'm really surprised only two people got the Dark Half reference, but yep - you got it!
