Soul searching and questions about the future
Most of you know I'm not happy in my job and I'm planning on leaving. Thing is, I've been planning to leave since I started in the job and that was in 2000.

I was speaking to my hairdresser today about the fact I want to open a bookshop in the village and she was so positive about it that it made me take a step back and really think about it. My friends have all been supportive of the idea in the past but much as that's appreciated it's always been coloured by the fact that they/you are my friends and as such will say things I want to hear. The girl today, I'd never spoken to her before today and yet she was excited about the idea. (Bizarrely enough my family doesn't want me to do it - well my sister doesn't anyway.)

So I'm going to do it.

Really.

I'm scared, I don't know where I'm going to get the money from or how to even start building a business plan, but I am going to do it. This time next year I will either be in the position of running my own business or be able to say "at least I tried".

I really am quite scared about this but also more optimistic and... content than I have been in years.

Oh - and for Serenity fans? There's at least two different trailers on UK tv right now - I've seen both of them on Living and C4 at various points today

Good luck!

Of course, loss of Shona internet time will be a bad consequence, but I hope you'll be happier as a bookshop owner.

I own my own business - flower store. A word of advice - figure how much money you need. Then fudge up a bit. Then double it - 'cos that's how much you'll probably *really* need.

Get a good lawyer. Get a good business coach. Listen to them.

Network, network, network.

Hire, if you must, very carefully. My second store was a near total disaster due to constant employee difficulties.

Best of luck - it really is worth it all.

Ditto to what [livejournal.com profile] jgracio said on less Shona-time being a sad thing, but still, it's something you've ben really wanting to do for a long time so go for it!

:)

I hope it works out for you! *hugs*

Wow. Wow! That's really exciting!

A thousand times good luck!

I don't really know the first thing about setting up a business, so I won't attempt to give useful advice! I'm sure you'll be getting it from plenty of other places. Just make sure you get every bit of free advice that's going, whether from government, friends, other booksellers, etc.

I'm really glad you're going for this. Will be praying for you and sending lots of good Anya-esque money-making vibes in your direction!

Anything I can help you with, just ask. Helped a few friends work through the legal jargon when they were setting up their own company down in Southampton, but that was eight years ago and my legal knowledge (which is English based not Scottish) is very rusty now, but I'll try to help if you want or need it.

Wow, I'm impressed. Something like that would really scare me. I'm sure once you get started it'll fall into place. Good luck!

Try this website for hints and tips on setting up (and running) a business.

Business Link

The organisation also has offices and advisor type people, so if there's one near you I'm sure they could help.

And again... obviously I'm not nearby but I know bits about various parts of running a business, so if you ever want to give me a yell then I'll try and help.
