*gulp*
Wow. It's a strange feeling to be in a shop and hand over a lot of money all at once. £139 in one go. The glasses are kinda cute - not the designer pair she was trying to get me to buy - but I won't get them for another four or five working days. So that'll be next weekend before I can pick them up - unless my sister goes into labour early (she's due on the 14th) and I take time off to watch the kids and manage to get into the opticians then...

£139

*gulp*

I did get a pair free - which are also pretty cool - but still, £139?

Yikes! That sounds quite a bit of money! But I am sure they are lovely and will do your eyesight no end of good.

What's a real kick in the teeth is that the girl said my prescription ahd only changed slightly so if I hadn't lost my glasses I'd have been fine with them for a while longer...

Ah well.

That's just really annoying...and financially depressing! I sure hope these new glasses are at least prettier than your old ones.

They made of gold or something?

Well, that makes me glad I had my eyes lasered a good six years ago. The recuperation hurt like a mother but at least no glasses. :)

I heard an optician talking about laser surgery on the radio at the weekend - apparently depending on the type of problem you have with your eyes, surgery may only work until your late 40s. Plus, I'm not keen on surgery to be honest... (hence me still having a torn ligament in my wrist rather than having it replaced with an artificial one... *g*)
[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com on November 30th, 2005 08:24 am (UTC)
I did it on impulse really. I decided, talked to my optician and didn't allow myself to have doubts, lest I rethink the whole matter.

They did warn me that there was a chance the eye problems could return, since the eyes are still "changing" until you're 40 or something, but till now it hasn't happened, I still have great vision.

And I'm not too keen either. Especially when the surgery is pretty much computer controlled. And you're conscious. And can smell the results of the laser cauterizing (polishing) your eyes. And being a programmer thinking just who made the OS of the computer controlling the laser. :)

Fun for the entire family. :)

You're far braver than I!
[identity profile] emeraldswan.livejournal.com on November 30th, 2005 08:10 am (UTC)
I have absolutely no concept of how much that is. Can you convert that into American?

On another note, I cannot imagine going that long without my glasses. I'd . . . I don't know what I'd do, honestly. I can barely see at all without them, and I'm not kidding. Without my glasses on, I can't make out a single letter on the computer screen while sitting right in front of it. By the end of an hour, I usually have a headache so bad I can barely stand it. I don't know how I'd survive a week.

And OMG! I had no idea your sister was that far along!
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on November 30th, 2005 08:25 am (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure how much it translates to - I think it's probably around the $200 mark. Hey - I actually just found a converter and it's $240.5810...

*g*

I've been really struggling without my glasses to be honest - I have tinted ones for driving so I've been okay there, but otherwise? I've been a little lost without them.

Sis is getting to the stage now where she can't really move around very much without getting knackered - but she's still working. I think she's planning on working right up to her due date if possible. She's insane.

I didn't do anything my third trimester. I hadn't graduated from uni yet, so I took the semester off and stayed home. I was really, really lazy. :D

And, that's about what I paid for my last set of glasses. I got one pair one daily wear and one pair tinted. The tinted were "free".
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on November 30th, 2005 09:33 am (UTC)
I still have the tinted pair from my last prescription and since that hasn't changed majorly I should be okay to still use those - which'll mean I have three pairs. Yay!
[identity profile] willowmina.livejournal.com on November 30th, 2005 12:15 pm (UTC)
Sho, are they specifically for PC work, 'cause the Uni may cover the cost of the lenses if they are. I know my lot do. I know I handed over £200 plus for my specs last year (luckily that was a pair free as well), but I think I got about £90 back to cover the lenses.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on November 30th, 2005 12:17 pm (UTC)
I got the coating on the lenses for PC work but my Uni only pays for the eyetest - which was free anyway at the place I go to. Now, the other unis in Glasgow offer better deals...

£139? Sounds about right.

I'm terrible with glasses myself. Generally I take from two to six years between 'updating' them. The doctors are always annoyed with me but the price thing is mostly the reason. One old pair of mine cost me something like 3,000 francs back in the day. It's practically extortion in some places nowadays.

Eye surgery is too scary though and to be honest, I like the possibility to use my specs almost like a mask. Take them off and the world goes away. An on/off switch for reality *g*
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 1st, 2005 12:53 am (UTC)
Last time I got them done it was £112 and that was with the anti-glare coating which seems to have trebled in price since then. The designer pair the girl was trying to get me to buy were really nice but they were also £150 for the frames alone - add fifty quid for the lenses and then 30 for the coating... yeah, not for me thanks! The pair I got are really cute though... and it'll be worth it if it means I can stand to be in front of the computer for longer each day!

Mine were about £200 a few years ago so that seems a good price to me. (It all really depends on the strength/complications associated with your prescription. My mum's latest set which, since she fell earlier this week thanks to a bad pavement are now in need of one replacement lens or complete replacement, cost £400. Yay for travel insurance - hopefully she's covered apart from the excess.)

*g* maybe I am just a stingy Scot after all... *g*

I was expecting it to be about that much to be honest, it's just such a horrible feeling handing over that much cash all in one go. And not having anything to show for it for another week at least!
