Gah!!

I'm in pain. A lot of pain. A few years ago I suddenly found I couldn't move my head without searing pain shooting down my arm. Several Xrays and a lot of anti-inflammatory drugs later I was told that I have an extra bone on one of the vertebrae in my neck. Vertebrae normally look like a circle with three prongs sticking out of it, one of those prongs in my neck has an extra bit of bone on it. It had trapped a nerve at the time and that's what was causing the pain. I could have had it operated on at the time but because of the location I was advised that it might be better not to. I had physio, I had ultrasound treatment, I had painkillers so strong that they actually use them as anaesthetics in minor surgery, I got over it.

It's been... six years? Maybe seven.

It's back.

So I'm trying once again to find the balance between not being in agony and not being spaced out on painkillers. Joy.

Plus, I actually managed to get a lot of writing done on my Morocco Africander fic today - only problem is that I've decided to use a specific format for the writing and the nature of that format means that I'll be lucky to get away with this being a single chapter. In fact, I'll be lucky to keep this under twenty chapters if I let the story go where it wants to go... Ah well, the first part will definitely be ready to post by the deadline. :)

Now Tunisia on the other hand...

ETA DAMMIT! I hate it when Windows does that... I had an update download the other night and didn't really think anything much of it. (Beyond checking it was a valid Windows update of course!) Now I find it's set my keyboard settings to US instead of UK. I like having my @ sign on the right of the keyboard and the " above the 2... Now I have to go and change the settings manually. This is the second time a standard update has frakked up my settings like that.

(and that may just be the first time I said 'frakked'. Heh!)

GAH!!!! I can imagine the kind of horrible pain you are in and my heart goes out to you! I hope the pills take care of it and that it goes away completely very, very soon!

:) keeping a heat source on it seems to help as well - although that's probably more psychosomatic than anything else. It should clear up - if it is the nerve being trapped then resting it and tacking the pills should work. I hope!

I ent through something similar a few years back and it was absolutely HORRIBLE, so I am rooting for you to be pain free very soon! May the heat, pills, and rest do the trick!

Ouch. That sounds horrible. *hugs*

Do hope you get well soon.

It's not fun. :) Hopefully it shouldn't be too much longer before it's cleared up - I'd cross my fingers but that involves using both hands so... :)

I owe you a beta returned - sorry it's taken me so long, I got kinda wrapped up in Saharan research. You'll have it back really soon!

Have you found anything that works? I know you've mentioned you have back problems in the past. Right now I'm sticking to 'brufen, a heat pad, and if I really have to some paracetomol on top of the lot. I would kill for the knock-out pills I had when it first happened but I need a prescription for that. Grrr.

Was offline most of the day and only caught this now. Sorry 'bout that.

As for the pains, no. Sadly I haven't found anything that really works. I try to keep the neck warm, I try to move gingerly and I rely on Tylenol and other painkillers when the pain reaches blinding levels. Fanfiction is sort of an escape for me then because I can sit still for hours in front of the PC, not move around much and still sorta keep myself busy.

Even when the pain is bad, I mostly try to stick with the aspirin/Tylenol/whatever I buy over the counter, so as far as miracle remedies go, I really have no idea. When possible, I just fall back to a more defensible position (i. e. buried under a comforter on the couch with a mass of pillows and a hot water bottle.)

A neck-brace, maybe? Something to keep your head in a static position? I do know that one of the old family friends had vertebrae problems and using a neck brace for a certain extent of time during an "attack" generally helped to lessen it.

I hope the pain goes away. Any idea why it came back?

And you're frelled if you start saying frakk, it's not of the good, it's chepooka. :)

No real clue - might be the sofa bed I guess but it's not that bad. The physio did say it would come back but it would be a long while before that happaned. I took that to mean longer than six or seven years. :)

But the best they can do is make it go away for a few years?

The operation would cure it for good - they'd basically chip away the extra piece of bone - but it's closer to my brain stem than they're generally happy operating. Basically if it's not causing debilitating pain or making me black out then it's better I medicate myself than risk surgery that close to my brain. Once I balance the meds it's manageable, it's just finding that balance that's the tricky part.
