Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present... a poem

I always said I was going to post a summary of the experiences at the Serenity Squared convention, and I never quite got around to completing it. Which meant I didn't share the first poem I've written in a very long time. When I was 11 I placed second in a local poetry contest and was told I had "incredible use of imagery" and that I was "surely a young poet to watch for in the future". This is actually the first poem I've written since that contest. On the Saturday night at the convention we stayed till quite late in the 'disco' and were having a really good time until the Starfury DJs decided to spend at least an hour pandering to the demands of people who are the type who have to organise everything. I grabbed the "Staff Only" sign at the centre of the table and pulled out a pen, everyone else at the table was wondering what the hell I was doing, but I was writing this (or at least scribbling the first draft of it!)

So, with a little bit of trepidation, I present this. (Oh, and this is how I talk, so I swear in it.)

Inspired by Heather et al who dominate every Starfury convention I've been to, and dedicated to Neil Roberts for daring to buck the trend.

Dance
The true expression of self
Of joy, of sorrow.
Of love, of hate
Of pleasure,
Of pain
Of hopes, of dreams.

Organising it,
Regulating it,
Draining it of any semblance of soul
There is nothing here that is dance.
This is merely the expression of the
Desire to conform.

The need to fit in
The want to be recognised
This is when self is lost.

This is when we all become one more
Face in the crowd.

Y.M.C. Fucking A.

Thank you! It really has been two thirds of my life since I was inspired enough to even think of writing a poem. This just seemed to come from the heart.

I know how you feel. I hadn't written any fiction in over twenty years when I started back with fanfiction (I won awards when I was 12, funny how we have that a bit in common...you were younger, but still...). I think it's great that you were inspired to write poetry again.

*runs off at the thought of the inane running towards each other that seems to be the only part of the song anyone remembers...*

*then remembers the really terrible parody they do of Queen and thinks maybe Star Trekkin' aint so bad after all...*
