Enough already...
I have no problem with the English being proud of the fact they won the World Cup in... oh let me think, I've not heard it mentioned in at least ten seconds... oh yeah, that's right: 1966. God knows if we (Scotland) had done the same we would also be crowing about it forty years later, but please. BBC? Stop saying the 'whole country' is behind the team. No, actually, we're not. I wish the England squad all the best, but I live in this country and I am not supporting them. The 'whole nation of England' may be supporting the team (although you'd probably be surprised at how many people just don't care) but the 'country' is Britain. No matter what the PC folk say, most of Scotland is not supporting England. Most of Scotland is supporting the opposition - or, like me, don't actually watch football and don't give a crap. (Although, I know it's the obvious choice, but if I see a Brazil shirt going cheap? *g*)I'm fairly sure the same could be said for Wales, Northern Ireland, hell even the Cornish don't consider themselves to be English - anyone asked them who they're supporting?

Scotland didn't qualify for the World Cup but even if we had, I probably wouldn't care enough to watch much more than the first game.

Some of us just don't care and we are getting increasingly fed up with the British Broadcasting Corporation letting the whole 'national pride' dominate the news. There was an earthquake in Indonesia at the weekend, a lot of things which should have made the news but which were bumped down to make way for the story about the surviving members of the '66 team with their shirts.

Enough already.

It's incredibly annoying. At least you have Radio Scotland up there as an alternative!

When it comes to football, the BBC really is the EBC. Especially, I think, Radio 5 Live. I think it's always going to be the case, unfortunately, because the vast majority of their listeners are English. Plus, maybe they figure that people wanting specifically Scottish coverage of sports will tune into Radio Scotland. But this doesn't stop it being bloody annoying!

Well, in the absence of Scotland (or Ireland or someone else I'd be inclined to support), I shall be supporting Sweden in the World Cup!

That actually reminds me of the fact that our news always does similar things regarding presidential actions. The American people are not encompassed by that putz in the White House!

Oh, I don't know. If the Scottish team had made it through, maybe the beeb wouldn't be saying stuff about how the "whole country" supports the team but working the rivalry angle instead. If the Scots had made it through and not the English, I'd be supporting the Scots, f'rinstance.

It's just something, you know? Something to share with other people, even if it's only just a small thing. You're down at the pub and there's nothing much on the telly and then they flick on the sports and suddenly, you're not alone anymore, you're sharing something with everyone else. From the POV of the resident hermit that I am, I don't think that's such a bad thing.

Sure, there was an earthquake over the weekend. And the Beeb chose not to talk so much about that. When a plane goes down, the first thing the news in EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY will ALWAYS do is to talk about their own nationals. British news will mention how many British nationals were hurt before talking about the others. French will do the same for the French. So on and so on. Basically, the audience is interested in what hits close to home, even though they should be informed about what's going on further afield too. Maybe sometimes news coverage (when it's not completely biased) just forgets that or doesn't defend it properly. It doesn't mean they don't care, just that they've lost focus. It'll quiet down again eventually.

y'see, you say that, and I know you believe it, but the thing is - there hasn't been (in my lifetime anyway) an instance where Scotland has qualified for a major international sporting event which England have not also qualified for.

I agree that the sense of community that the BBC are currently trying to stimulate is a wonderful thing, and if that community exists then that's wonderful - if people can sit down in front of the game on BBC1 (or 2 or ITV or whoever is showing it) and feel part of something, then that is an amazing thing. The problem is that the assumption that everyone in this country (and ex-pats) will feel the same way is ridiculous. It's not going to happen, whether it's because people aren't supporting the team with the three lions on their shirt, or whether it's just because they're scunnered with all the hype...

Not quite true. I believe you were alive in 1978 when Scotland were in the football World Cup and England weren't. Though you'd have been way too young to remember it, even if you were interested in football!

That was the first World Cup I was aware of, and the trauma and disbelief of Scotland's loss to Peru and draw with Iran, followed by the fantastic-but-not-quite-good-enough victory over Holland is ne'er to be forgotten!

I seem to remember that the national TV was fairly solidly supporting Scotland then.

Ah - you're right, beyond my memory I'm afraid. Almost wish I cared enough about football to have remembered that one!

(hey, is that the Ally's Army time? Random memory just hit me there... sorry, back now!)
[identity profile] smhwpf.livejournal.com on May 30th, 2006 05:14 pm (UTC)
O yeah. That's the one. Altogether now

We're all off wi' Ally's army
We're all off tae Argentine
And we'll really shake 'em up
When we win the World Cup
'Cos Scotland are the greatest football team!

*blushes with embarrassment*

I wrote my own version for France '98, the last time Scotland qualified:

We're all off wi' Craigie's army
We're all off tae gay Paris
And we'll really blaw them doon
When we reach the second roond
'Cos Scotland... we'll we're no' sae bad really!

But even that proved too optimistic. :(

I supported France after England lost last time. I'm not really into any national pride thing, I just get a buzz from the sense of community/connection. It's fun. And hey, it's not like this happens every other week, is it? *g*

If not Portugal, I root for some African country or maybe Trinidad and Tobago, in short some country that's never won, and who isn't a sports Juggernaut.

I simply cannot agree with you more. I'm sick to absolute death of England and their obsession with all things soccer. Especially their 1966 win. Fuck's sake!!! As you say, 40 years ago! GIVE.IT.A.REST. already!

It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever support them, that's for sure!

And seriously, I thought Australia was obsessed with sporting wins - but no-one can compete with the English and the 1966 thing. *ugh*

I'm actually on my knees for them to lose. And, speaking on behalf of the Irish, I can assure you, so is most of Ireland ;p We'd rather see the Dutch win!

I do believe if you wish to cheer for Scotland, one of the Trinidad and Tobago players that will be starting against England is a Jason Scotland.

*grin*
