I hate being a girl. Seriously, like I don't gave it bad enough scraping together money to buy a pint of milk, now I have to spend three quid on 'essentials' just because I'm female? Seriously, if men had to buy tampons/towels/ibuprofen once a month it'd be free.

I'm not a happy bunny today but at least it helps explain why I was so down yesterday morning - PMS on top of stress is a bitch.

Okaaay, now that's out in the open... Loads of my UK flisters (and some not-so-UKers) are descending on London tomorrow for the screening of some new film or other... it doesn't have a proper distributer in the UK I believe but a special screening has been arranged (thanks to the hard-working and awesome [livejournal.com profile] tigressunicorn). To everyone that's going to see Ten Inch Hero tomorrow? I hate you all.

Nah, I'm just hideously jealous and I hope you all have a fantastic time and tell me all about it! (without, you know, spoiling the film for me?)

I'm bored now. Plus? I got an email from the HR people at GUL telling me my new staff card was on it's way. WTF? I didn't ask for a staff card, I asked what the hell had happened to my P45... (Non-UKers, the P45 is the certificate one gets from your previous employer when your employment is terminated. You need it to sign on for Job Seekers Allowance and any benefit help with taxes etc.) I swear someone there has forgotten they sacked me. Wonder what would happen if I could scrape together the money to go to work on Monday? (Not going to happen - I don't work there, and if I can barely afford food and essentials then there's no way I can afford the £150 a weekly train ticket costs.)

I think it's time to let the big guns take over - going to a lawyer might be a bit OTT but I guess the DSS (or whatever they're called these days) must have a history of dealing with this kind of thing?

Right. I'm just waffling again. I'm off to try to find a job again...

(eta I just glanced around the posters on the wall beside me and there's an NHS Scotland one with a blurred out picture of Joe Public using the computer to look up something. I swear Joe Public looks exactly like Neil Gaiman. I may be losing my mind.)

There's no way the DSS don't have some experience with this - and you've a right to use their phone bill etc. at the very least to get this sorted out. It sounds increasingly like HR have f'd up the paperwork from your hearing - did you get anything away with you from that? If you did it would be useful to the DSS, I'd think.

It might also be worth getting your GP involved. They do have some sway with the DSS, and might be able to invoke your medical history as a reason why you should get money from them straight away (anything's worth a try, right, and they are part of the "system")

Never thought about getting the GP involved. She was dead impressed with how well I was coping when I told her I'd lost my job - of course I wasn't being completely honest 'cause she had another doctor sitting in to observe at the time (our surgery seems to be a stepping stone in post-grad training, meaning we get at least one new doctor every year who only stays for a year).

I'm heading up to sis's place to drop off the DVDs (and if I time it right, get some food from her...) so I'll see if I can use her phone to call the DSS, otherwise I might have to walk into Saltcoats on Monday to talk to them about it.

Hey Sho - and good to see you back around!

I'm fairly sure you don't have to have your P45 to sign on. See here for example (a trade union site) - it says under "How to claim", "Take your P45 or your national insurance number if you don't have a P45". Go down to the Job Centre with every document you do have, tell them the situation, I expect what will happen is that you'll be able to fill in the forms and start making the claim, and hopefully they'll help you in chasing up the P45.

I finally got an email from them today saying that my P45 was on it's way. It looks as though they're only dating it from September, but given that I've managed through this far without it I think I'll just take what I can get.

That, or they'd have worked out a pill to circumvent the need for them without mucking around with hormones & elevating cancer risks & so on. Fuckers. *is having her own girly TMI issues today*

Obviously, I don't really know how things work where you are, but in the US, it's pretty common for people to have a hard time getting benefits & the like set up when they have to deal with the bureaucracy alone; while not actually required, an attorney definitely seems to grease the wheels here, so seeing one might not be a particularly extreme response.

I would imagine that the DSS encounter this fairly regularly - it would be worth talking to them about it. Surely they must have a mechanism for allowing you access to funds even in the absence of a form? Perhaps you can ask them to ring your former employer and verify verbally as a temp thing?
