*yawn*
Yeah, so I won't be posting any more of Walk Away tonight - I'm literally propping my eyelids open here. So I'm off to go get some sleep and will post in the morning. (Plus, I've now speed-read [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs's "Acme Heartbreak Repair Kit" which I hadn't previously read and am confident that where I plan to take Walk Away is a completely different direction. I hate plagiarism, even inadvertent, and if it had turned out that the stories were following a similar line I would have just stopped here. It's very different though. I think. So for now I'm going to keep going.)

Oh, and kinda put my foot in it at work but I don't really care. Hallowe'en has always been a big deal in Scotland - much more so than in England but not as big as in the States. Anyway, last year I was at a convention over Hallowe'en but some of the people at work (led by [livejournal.com profile] engelsteorra and Monkey I believe) went in for the whole costume thing and I carved a pumpkin before I left. Anyway - this year I checked with the boss and got the okay so I sent an email around inviting people to do the same again and if enough people did it we could maybe have a collection for charity. As I was leaving tonight I said to one woman "I hope you'll be dressed up on Monday!" and she glared at me like I was some kind of demon and said "No, I won't. I'm Christian. I don't believe in Hallowe'en." Um. Ooops. *g*

My mother's a minister and she dresses up for Halloween!

Scotland's a predominantly Christian country - or perhaps I should say historically it has been a Christian country and many people can be very evangelical (no capital letter) in the pursuit of their faith. (I have friends from the Western Isles who still consider it blasphemous to cook, clean, watch television or listen to the radio on Sunday for example.) I guess sometimes I just forget that Hallowe'en bothers people who are so devout in their chosen paths. Mind you, the woman who said that hates me so maybe it was more about me suggesting it than anything else!

It probably does have something to do with it being you who made the suggestion. People can be so snotty!!!

I hate plagiarism, even inadvertent, and if it had turned out that the stories were following a similar line I would have just stopped here.

Personally, I adhere to the idea that there are few truly "new" stories, only fresh angles with which they are treated. BTVS as a whole, for instance, had a few themes that were not exactly original despite all the hype about turning clichés on their head.

"Walk Away" so far has me hooked. Honestly, it feels fresh to me. And I for one would be really sad to see it dropped for any reason.

BTW, your worries about any serious resemblances with [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs' fic. Does that means what I'm hoping it might re:other characters involved in this story?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on October 28th, 2005 11:53 am (UTC)
I'll be completely honest and say that I hadn't read Liz's fic purely because I was waiting for it to be complete before it started (I tend to only read one WIP per author at a time and I'm completely hooked on Water Hold Me Down right now!) but [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs pointed out that if I were to continue with the Walk Away it would be difficult to avoid the similarities so I went and skim read all that's been posted so far.

My plans for my fic are really different, that's not to say that some of the same characters may not show up - in fact I'll go so far as to say that the core Scoobies will all at least make an appearance - but as to why they're there or what they'll do? Well you'll just have to wait a little longer to find that one out!

And thank you for saying it feels fresh - it's always one of my worries that the tales I try to tell are just tired re-imaginings of far superior works so for you to say that takes a weight off for the moment!

*bwuh?*

Oh! THAT!

The whole concept of Buffy being in Rome for more than just partying wasn't a new thing.

I did read Part 1 of Walk Away this morning (my time), moved on to Part 2, realized where you were going somewhere near the middle of Part 2 and immediately stopped reading.

I think the set-up is completely different and Buffy's mission in Acme seems to complete different from what she's doing in Walk Away. But since I'm paranoid about inadvertant plagairism myself, I'll be staying very far away from your story for while (pleasedon'tbemad), or at least until I finish Acme.

No worries at my end.

*breaths sigh of relief*
*grin* I'm so glad to hear that! And I feel really bad that I haven't read Acme before now although I think I'll be taking a leaf out of your book and not reading more in depth until I've finished Walk Away just to make doubly sure I don't subconsciously borrow anything.

Re: *breaths sigh of relief* (trying again, because I'm a dope)
My concept of plagiarism is a hell of a lot narrower than people think — I think my involvement in helping out in some plagiarism cases has earned me a rep as a bit of a hardass on the subject, which is both good and bad.

Good, because some nitwit will think twice before pulling a cut 'n paste job on me. They know if they get caught, I will scream holy hell about it.

Bad, because there are only so many ideas in a limited 'verse so it only follows that multiple people will be thinking along the same lines and may have stories that might have similar ideas. I'd hate for someone to get scared off from writing their own version of story type XYZ just because I or someone else tried something similar.

The only similarity I saw between our two stories (what little I saw), was that Buffy had reasons to be in Rome that were different from the reasons stated on AtS. I think I've lost count how many stories are mining that same vein.

So, if anyone says anything to you about similarities to The Acme Heartbreak Repair Kit, point them to this thread to show we've alread chattered about it.

Although, thank them for me for watching my back for me just the same, because, seriously, if it wasn't for people giving us writerss the heads-up, we'd never know about the yo-yos who really are plagiaizing our stuff. :-)

That woman would really not like me. I wrote my senior thesis at university about the history of Halloween. I have arguments coming out of my ears for why it's not an evil holiday. . .

In answer to your question (somewhere, I don't remember where you asked it), I will be around this weekend. Saturday's gonna be the best day for chatting. Probably around 1-ish on, my time?

'Suprisingly', I'm sure I know who you mean. Man I'd like to kick her in her freakish arse.....

Ahhh beer, it is my friend.

I almost wish I was going to be at work on Monday, I'd totally dress up. I will definitely be wearing my witchy tights to the cinema on Monday night though..... Maybe even my hat. If I have the balls......

There was your chance to say, "No, not a costume. I'm just sick of the ugly-ass shit you wear and were hoping you'd be presentable."

(Except for the really bad grammar mistake, which you wouldn't have made.)
