INAP again!
So yeah - INAP is going to be relaunched with the updated efiction script which will mean a fair bit of work on design. Lucky I love doing that sort of thing isn't it?

aaaaand.....

I am going to use this opportunity to switch about the categories a little which means I'm looking for suggestions.

'ship' categories are all I have right now, the suggestion was made (I think it was [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs who suggested it) that those be mirrored in a 'buddy' category as well (for non-relationship fics featuring those characters), and what else should I have?

Aaaaand....

would anyone be interested in an impromptu design contest for it?

Thank you for the heads up last night, Sho!

So sorry that INAP got thrashed! I can't believe that happened to you!

Categories? One huge "Fics by pairing" category with subcategories for each 'ship (and a sub-subcategory of "/" or "&" for each 'ship), one huge "Fics by genre" category with the usual suspects as subcategories for that (comedy, adventure, drama, etc...), and mebbee a "Fics by author" category? Also, pimpage of the F/X, B/X, picture archive and whatever else you've got going smack bang on the main page.

Layout-wise, I'm tempted to volunteer but I skid-row suck at web design (don't even know CSS). Any graphics that are needed, I'd definitely have a crack at though. And as this is for INAP, why not hold that as the next challenge on [livejournal.com profile] zeppo_stillness too?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 10:45 am (UTC)
comedy, adventure, drama, romance, historic, futuristic/sci-fi, horror, angst, fluff, alternate universe, crossover, NC-17/PWP

does that sound about right for genre categories?

I like the idea of the subcategory of / and & - I was wondering how best to go about that one.

And graphics - go for it! *g* Banners/backgrounds would be appreciated. I may just have a ZS contest but then the ZS re-design contest I ran over October got a totla of Zero entries so...

Finally got the go ahead from the webhosts to upload the new patch (and they wished me a Happy Christmas - sucha a change from the old hosts!) so I could conceivably start the upgrade once I've had something to eat... *g*

As categories go, you've pretty much got them all covered :)

Maybe a character POV one too? I mean, if a fic is written from Buffy or Faith's perspective as they work with Xander, then maybe there could be a category to tell people about that.

As for the rest, there's gotta be a way of tying in the "fics for pics" -a-thon into [livejournal.com profile] zeppo_stillness. Maybe also mix in the amnesty week/month concept. Make this open to non-ljers and broaden the entire thing to include banners and whatnot too.

Hey! The 'thon should be kicking off some time soon. Maybe we could get a few authors to help relaunch INAP by participating in exchange for help from the graphics fiends out there with the restructuring of the archive? Could be an idea.

As for my own contribution, how 'bout a variation on my "Quiet Fandom" banner?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:40 pm (UTC)
Oooo - just realised I hadn't replied to this one yet.

Character POV would be good - but I may add that to another setting rather than category because it might get messy otherwise.

Yes - the 'athon (which you need to come up with a proper name for!) will be pimped beyond belief at ZS (I know I haven't announced it over there but it's on hiatus until after my birthday... *g*) so if you can wait till the first week of the New Year that would tie in really well?

And yup, the graphis folks over at ZS are incredibly talented so it could be a really good idea!

And have I mentioned lately how much I love your 'Quiet Fandom' banner? :)
Naol: Mara//Mystery[identity profile] naol.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:54 pm (UTC)
First week of Jan, it is :)

We'll open the 'thon with three distinct categories: fics for pics, pics for fics and INAP goodies. Authors will be able to volunteer for both the fics for pics and the INAP at their convenience (I'm already down on all the lists *g*) and once we know who is going to be doing what, I'll pimp the whole thing in the Y!groups too. We'll amnesty this thing, make it possible to participate even if you don't have an LJ and I'll host the pics and whatnot in my scrapbook with email links as I did for the fics submitted in the 70 questions 'thon.

Feel free to gakk and modify the QF banner at your whim and I've also got the source pic somewhere on my computer that I'll f-lock for you too, in case you wanna make use of it *g*

You know, that sounds like a scarily thought-out-already plan.

I always have a plan. And I always hope they'll come together in the end. Sadly, without Mr T, Templeton Peck and Howling Mad Murdock to back me up, I usually just wind up blowing smoke ring *grin*

I'm working on a post of the first draft of the challenge now, to put it up for review by the Flist and see if it's an idea they'll go for when I do launch it come January.

Beginnings of a scheme
Here's the broad lines so far

Feel free to add anything or comment on stuff as I need the input :)

*gulp*

So I went ahead with the upgrade...

Site's back and looks incredibly different right now...

For the categories - how about having an NC-17 category, and a PWP category within that? And should I maybe have a distinction in there with the ships?

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 11:55 am (UTC)
Changed the default skin again to have a Xander-esque feel to it!

Basically I'm concerned that at the moment there's no place for non-ship fics on the site - do you have suggestions for how I can categorise them?

[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:24 pm (UTC)
I think it's fixed now - although the text of the review seems to have gone now. Sorry!

And for the ship/non-ship debate - I think it's more like a 70/30 split, maybe 65/35 right now, but I've alwyas had this nagging thought some people may be put off uploading because the categories were off putting.
[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 11:52 am (UTC)
Site looks very busy! You know, loads of stuff around, can't say I dislike it.

Ratings, not a category, you already have the possibility to search for those.

So IMO :

Gen :
- Adventure
- Horror
- etc.
Shippy (or whatever the heck you wanna call it) :
- Slash
- Angel
- Spike
- etc.
- Het
- Buffy
- Faith
- etc.

Is it possible for a fic to exist in more than one category?
[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 11:56 am (UTC)
Darn, HTML ate my indentation... :(
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:02 pm (UTC)
*g*

I think I get what you mean - that was my kinda thinking as well.
[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:08 pm (UTC)
I've been working with HTML for seven years, but genius boy here still goes for the "Whoo, I'll just line the words with whitespace, it'll be purty and informative!"

No, HTML trims your whitespace to a single space, moron! :)

Heh!
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:24 pm (UTC)
Heh!
Naol: Experimental//Fred Colon[identity profile] naol.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 11:57 am (UTC)
Ooh! Purty!
Fave skins: Writing, 3 column & default2.

When you think about it, you only really need the PWP category, don't you? As the fics themselves are rated. Maybe instead of PWP, you could just have a category that regroups all the fics the author's rate nc-17/mature. Call the category "The restricted section" or something librarianey :)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:04 pm (UTC)
Re: Ooh! Purty!
You like the default2 one? I personally really, really, really hate that one... *g*

My mum decorated her bedroom that colour once, I think I'm having associative problems!

And now you've got me thinking of what to call the restricted section - in our library it's Stack, but that's kinda been americanised to mean shelves nowadays so... *g*
Naol: Emoticon//Love[identity profile] naol.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:26 pm (UTC)
Re: Ooh! Purty!
My absolute fave is the "Writing" one. That's really slick already *two thumbs up*

As for the restricted section, why not have the old "Must be over 18" pop-up come in there rather than when you click on the stories within that category? And as for a name... What was it that Xander took that Wicca book from the library for? The semi-nude engravings? Something like that could be a fun title. Or "The prodigious porn collection" :)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:32 pm (UTC)
Re: Ooh! Purty!
there is actually an option with the upgrade to deny people under the age restricted age access to stories over a rating. Everyone would have to edit their profiles with their DOB for that to work, but I may take a look at it to see how it would work.

And you mean the "It's not what you think!"
"You like to look at the semi-nude engravings?"
"Ok, so it is what you think..."
book?

*g*

Maybe I could call it "Special" collections...
Naol: Experimental//Luis Royo[identity profile] naol.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:45 pm (UTC)
Re: Ooh! Purty!
I like the DOB idea. The pop-up did get annoying after a while, especially as I formatted the Partners fics with links between them. In the end, I decided to go with an overall 18 rating so as not to bypass anything.

Hah! I knew it was something to do with semi-nude engravings! I'm not much cop for precise recollection but I remember most references to nudity :)

Special collections has other connotations though. It could be used in another context if you ever wanted to, such as for highlighted fics or theme-of-the-month fics and so on. If this category is going to be mostly PWP, then something more overtly risqué could work (How 'bout "X rated"?).
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on December 23rd, 2005 12:50 pm (UTC)
I solemly swear...
"I am of the age of consent in my locale to view materials with adult content. I realize that by agreeing, the normal warnings for stories with adult content will be by-passed."

If you log in and go to the "your account" area there's an option to tick that statement, if you do that and you go to read an 18 rated story you shouldn't see the pop up any more.

:)
