I just read [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue's post on s1-2 Xander and it made me smile and remember all the things I love about his character - the good, the bad, the speedos... sorry, my mind wandered there, what was I saying? *g* I genuinly got a warm feeling from reading the love of this character who is no way perfect, who makes stupendous mistakes, who has flaws, but who is still (imo) a wonderfully rich character.

And then I opened some emails from a certain militantly het-only Xander yahoo group (yeah, that one) which I no longer contribute to other than letting people know when WKA is running, and the first email I read - which was a fic search request - just depressed the hell out of me. Yes, in later seasons there was a feeling that Xander was screwed over - god knows it takes a lot to get me to watch a season seven episode and still see the character in there - and there is bitterness out there over it. But does every single post to that group have to be vitriolic?

(And if I was to respond to the group saying something about it then it would only kick off a flame war, been burned that way in the past.)

Simple solution would be to leave the group, but the mostly-silent majority (of which I count myself as one) are usually quite happy to see the posts about the WKA and after posting the links to that group the nominations jump every time. So I stay, and in case of WKA questions, I went back to getting the emails delivered rather than my normal special notices membership. So that's aproximately 200 emails a day that get scanned and deleted.

Guess I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Gotta go - sister didn't book the car in but I called and the guy said if I was there before 9 they could fit me in.

Oh - 'fore I do - quick pimp! Check out [livejournal.com profile] spring_of_cordy - there are a lot of open dates still, Cordy-centric fanfic, fanart, fanvids etc are all accepted - c'mon over, join up and pick a day!

It seems to be a general consensus for a lot of people that I know that Season Seven is the hardest of the seasons to watch. It's just not the same show that I fell in love with by Season 7.

Thanks for the pimp :)

It's a pleasure to pimp this! Cordy is one of those characters who is an integral part of the show but never seems to feature all that much in fandom (unlike, say Andrew or Faith). I have ambitious things planned for my days - I just hope I can pull them off!

And you're so right, season seven just isn't the same show any more. There are some bright spots, but it was a chore to watch it sometimes.

Do what I do. Join the groups, but don't receive e-mail. :D

Normally that is what I do - or I stick to the 'special notices' alerts - but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss any WKA-centric questions so I went back to the individual emails for the time being. I'm back to special notices again - I just have to try to remember to check the site from time to time... *g*

Some of my favorite fics have been with characters I don't like or pairings I never could have imagined; it's all about whether I enjoy the writing, and it's always a surprise when I'm reminded there are so many who throw out the babies with their bathwater. Sticking to an all-anything diet isn't healthy, and militant extremism in the name of culture is never a pretty sight; hell, if I went by first impressions, I never would have read a single word of "Eating Out" -- I cringed when I saw the title, but I'll be damned if it isn't dead on characterization that fits into canon and makes Cordy/Willow both work and sizzle.

This particular group (and I'm sure there are others for other characters) just seems to have the effect of making any sane person want to bang their head against a brick wall after about an hour of reading the content. There are some damn good writers on there, and with it being one of the largest groups it's a useful source of contact for other Xander readers, but the sheer vitriol that pours out of some of those emails... it's just... insane!

(And I plan to give that fic a look later - like you say, a pairing that's not necessarily one that would be instantly believable, but it sounds fascinating!

Yay! I'm so glad that post made you smile. It was so wonderful to see all the rockin' Xander icons lined up in the comments, and I was amazed at the outpouring of Xander love - I mean, I knew a lot of Xander lovers - you, Liz Marcus, Nwhepcat, nemo_gravis, glossing, ladycat777, mpoetess, yin_again, stoptocheer, et al, but there were Xander lovers I'd never seen. So yay.

And yes, I feel you on the latter seasons and the seemingly never ending vitrol. I'm trying to do Seasons 3-7 and it's been slow going because it honestly makes me sad to type a Xander search into a Season 6 or 7 dialogue database and only get 5 or so hits. Because I want the post to be *just* love - low on the negativity. I just try to concentrate on my favorite Xander *moments* from those seasons (the speech in "Potential," for example and the scads of fantastic Xander future-fic, both het and slash.) *g*

And thanks for everything you do for Xander, too. - Crazydiamondsue

**hugs you**

Thank you for everything you do for the fandom, if it wasn't for your support (and others like you) I doubt I could run WKA at all, let alone delve into the murky depths of the vitriolic yahoo groups!

Good luck with the later seasons! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

*sigh*, I'm glad I don't bother with these vitriolicky posting boards...

Xander certainly got a bad deal in S7, but he did at least get to save the world in S6. People sometimes forget this! *g*

On a tangent, I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person in Buffy fandom who's actually a fan of both Xander and Spike. The two seem mutually incompatible, I suppose largely because of Spike getting all Xander's airtime in the later seasons. ("Can't I do both?" "Not legally!" *g*)

re: Spike and Xander, nope, you're not the only one. Amongst sonme het writers, there can be a tendancy to promote Xander and denegrate Spike, but that's not exclusive. I love Spike as a character, bad-ass Spike who screws up because he's so damned impatient is one of the best characters they introduced in the entire run of the show. Barely restrained chipped Spike who wants to help the Scoobies because at least that way he can vent some violence on something is hilarious. Spuffy? Gah. Don't get me started. *g*

And then there's the fact that quite probably the most popular slash pairing at the moment (and for the last few years) is Spander. So nope, it is entirely possible to like both characters. *g*

It's been I don't know how long since I quit that particular Yahoogroup. But are you saying that, in between all the off-topic discussions, the Yet-Another-Halloween stories, and the Top-THIS-One-for-Nobody-Else-Has-Ever-Heard-of-It crossovers with obscure fandoms, they actually squeeze in some discussion, vitriolic or otherwise, about Xander?

My mind has just suffered boggle-lash. :)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on February 21st, 2006 04:29 am (UTC)
Hehehe! Well, actually, it was more along the lines of "Joss Whedon is an ass" rather than talking about Xander, but it did almost veer onto topic for a while there.
