[livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies and [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip need your help!

They are looking for judges over at The Hellmouth Awards.

It's hosted on Dreamwidth but you don't have to be a member of that site to be a judge. (if you do wanna join that site, I think I have some invite codes still - lemme know)

Details are here. Please take a look!

Seems like lately I can't say anything without pissing at least one person off. Or hey, an entire fecking fandom (today marks my personal best - Fried Gold!!)

Right now I'm really fecking tired because I haven't slept since Friday.

If I've pissed you off, or if you have something to say, comment here.

I'm going to bed now.

Night all.

eta okay, so a little while (half an hour) after I posted, and I'm now going to bed. Having been in tears over an unfounded accusation and deleted the comment that caused all the shit on the fic journal, and pretty much decided to say screw it all to hell. If anyone thinks I would be complicent in keeping the silence over rape or abuse then you really don't know me.

I really do not need this crap.

I don't blame you for not liking a specific character.

I'm like you.

There are characters I don't like.

But, when you're writing a fic, especially a fic which is likely to be posted to a wider fandom base than your own personal flist, please have the sense to not say 'I really don't like CHARACTER A, s/he sucks, but I'm writing her/him anyway...'

It's only going to make people who like that character predisposed to hit F4 on your fic.

Jus' sayin'

I just had to make this mod post at the [livejournal.com profile] i_need_a_parrot comm.

Part of me is in two minds as to the whole thing. I loathe doing plagiarism investigations because me and confrontation don't go together all that well. I was plagiarised once, a whole passage was lifted out of What a Difference a Day Makes by one of the most... notorious, shall we say, plagiarists in the Xander fandom. (What made it worse was that this person had given the chapter a positive review on FF.net when I still posted there so this person didn't even plausible deniability when uncovered - the one passage of mine was but a drop in the ocean in that particular instance though).

Back to the point though, retelling a film/song/book/myth/whatever by replacing the characters with fandom ones? Is it plagiarism? I've said no (when the source is properly credited as it was in the instance in question) and I'm aware that in the SPN fandom there was actually a challenge last year (may well be running this year as well, I dunno, it's RPS so it's not my thing) in which 'classic' films were to be rewritten featuring J2. (I beta'd one, that's how I know about it - the comm had 'reel' in the name, but that's all I remember right now)

I dunno. Personally these are not my thing at all. Yeah, sure, using a film/myth as a kicking off point - absolutely. But rewriting it in it's entireity? Why? I just...*

I feel like the bad guy here, no matter what I do.

(Sho needs a reminder that she runs the sites because she enjoys it...)

BTW - I never knew the human body could turn such interesting colours. There's a whole damn spectrum right there on my hand.

* ETA on the other hand (and after another pain pill has kicked in) isn't it more of a challenge to a writer to focus so intensely on a story? Me, when I'm writing, I often wonder at the twists and turns the characters take me. I don't think I could be disciplined enough to follow a plot laid out by another writer. Hell, [livejournal.com profile] moscow_watcher should probably know that Crimson Regret was the one story I started with a definite end in site and yet when I started writing it the characters didn't like that ending and as such the story has faltered. It will finish when I acknowledge it and get back to writing it. (straww poll: original concept ending or character influenced ending? Either can be made to work!)

*is confused about everything*
*morphine is awesome* (as a prescribed pain relief medication, obvs.)

So I have an admission to make, I didn't watch Doctor Who when I was a kid because I really did hide behind the sofa. Not at the show, but at the closing credits. I don't even really know which era it was, but I remember there was a POV of spinning through space with stars and other asterological *things* flying past the camera. It freaked me the hell out. So much so that when I started using a computer (Windows 3.0...) I couldn't even look at that particular screen saver because of the childhood traumas!

But now I'm a fan, and I'm going through and watching old episodes when I can find them.

Yesterday I spent a huge amount of time watching season 17. The Tom Baker and Romana II era.

Even with the dodgy special effects and some of the more interesting mysogyny going on in the scripts, that show rocked.

I even got a hold of the unaired episode Shada which is incomplete. The version I have has an older Tom Baker filling in the gaps where footage is missing with narration and some voiceover work. It's fantastic. And not just because it was written by Douglas Adams.

So my Whovian nature is coming back, nice timing for the new episode due on Saturday!

In other fandom news, I have some reactiony things for SPN 4.16 & 4.17 which I 'composed' whilst watching them at the weekend. Unfortunately they're on my pen drive which is currently plugged into the USB port on my computer. That's in my house. I'm in the library. I'll post 'em when I get a chance later this week!

Sweet Charity rocked - I didn't get any of the people I bid on because my budget was so limited but the people who won me have given me awesome prompts so far. One Dark Angel fic, one Angel fic and as yet undefined graphics. *mock glares at graphics buyer* *realises she hasn't responded to emails about the prompts from any of the winners* *looks suitably ashamed*

Dollhouse gets better - I'm definitely a fan now, not hard core yet. But I like it.

Speaking of things of which I am a hardcore fan - Leverage. Rocks. LOVE that show. (although, I've been having conversations with myself about the pronunciation. I automaticaly say it to sound like 'leave-arage' but shouldn't it sound like 'lev-erage' (as in 'left')? How would Sophie say it? *g* Could still live without the apparent need the writers have to pair off the characters with each other, but it doesn't detract from the awesomeness so I can deal!

Please to be remembering that I'm a little behind others in the rate I watch the shows and I don't want to be spoiled. I'm not expecting you to feel guilty about using icons or whatever from an episode I haven't seen because that would be ridiculous of me, but my current rate is:

Supernatural: 4.17 It's a Terrible Life
Dollhouse: 1.07 Echoes
TSCC: 2.13 Earthlings Welcome Here
Leverage: 1.13 The Second David Job (season finale)
