Decisions, decisions...
I'm listed as a beta reader on INAP, Effects... and Hand on Heart. I also beta read for friends (some of whom post here and some of whom don't). I was contacted today by an INAP user asking for a beta reader, I've asked him for details of the kind of story he'd be writing, what pairing etc, and he's replied with an outline of what could be a damn good story. It's just... I don't know if I have time to do it right now.

For someone I already beta for - absolutely, no problem. For someone I've not read before (and to be honest I don't know from Adam) - I'm unsure.

I don't want to let him down, but I also know my own tendancy to take on too many things and [livejournal.com profile] joss10k starts this weekend for me. You saw my insane list of ongoing projects the other day.  (And I'm going to start running again to train for a charity race in July). I have a lot on my plate already so theoretically I should say no and apologise to him.

On the other hand, his premise does seem incredibly promising - his emails are thought out (with proper spelling even!) and he seems to be a very nice guy. I want to read his story, is it selfish of me to offer to beta read it when I know I might not have the time to devote to it?

I think what I'm going to have to do is sleep on it, answer him tomorrow one way or the other. Whatever I decide I am not going to be critical of him - it takes courage to reach out to someone you've never spoken to before in this manner and he's been really nice - he even seemed a little surprised that I replied asking for more details.

I suck at decisons.

I can relate...I have fifteen chapters of various fics sitting in my inbox right now. All I can do is share the immortal words of Nancy Reagan and hope they help you: JUST SAY NO.

I'm almost certain I'm going to say no. I had the prologue of my [livejournal.com profile] joss10k fic ready to give to my beta last night, saved it to my memory stick, switched off the light and the instant my head hit the pillow I realised it would work better from a completely different POV so I have to re-write it from scratch today. I get the feeling this story is going to eat my brain for the next few weeks and it's not fair of me not to give this guys fic the attention it deserves.

What I'm going to do is try to find some alternate beta readers for him I think. That way I'm giving him other options rather than just saying no outright.

I wish you the best in rewriting your story. And I think it's nice that you're going to help that writer find another beta.

Thanks! Luckily it's only the prologue that needs a POV shift - so it shouldn't take too long. It will also add to my word count - the new POV doesn't know these people so even though the reader will have an image of "Buffy" and "Willow" et al, the character I'm writing will be going on first impressions and making assumptions - whether those are accurate or not, well... It does mean my descriptive language is going to have to be more inclusive - but not too flowery.

Fine line I think!

That sounds like a nify story! I look forward to reading it!

Hopefully I can bring it all together in a coherent way - at the moment the plan looks good to me but the actual text of the story is scribbled on various notepads or saved to various .doc or .rtf files all over the place.

Organisation is not my strong point. :)

You and I have very similar approaches...

beta-ing pressed for time
Despite being a relatively speedy reader, I can relate. I've beta'd in the past and would love to do it again, particularly for someone who's pleasant and literate like you describe this author :) But when I'm trying to work on my own writing, it's a struggle just keeping up with recs. (Haven't made any more icons since that first batch I made in a burst of enthusiasm -- can't afford any other distractions for now!)

Re: beta-ing pressed for time
I've decided I'm going to say no to this guy, it wouldn't be fair of me to offre to do it and then be so distracted by my own writing that I can't concentrate on his. I'm going to try to compile a list of alternate beta readers for him though.
