looking for IT-type help/advice
I need to rename a large number of files (jpegs - screencaps) so they're in a specific format (letters-xxxx.jpg where the xxxx are sequential numbers starting from 0001)

Is there an easy way of doing this that works as a batch and doesn't put other characters in there (the XP fix adds brackets which screws up my formatting)?

:)

And adding in a song lyrics meme just 'cause I'm bored...

The ten songs what I have been mostly listening to lately.

Go on, have a guess – they’re not *that* obscure…

"I wish that I could push a button//and talk in the past and not the present tense"

"And I don’t understand and I don’t give a damn//'cause it's making no sense to me" Lennon, Brake Of Your Car (identified by [livejournal.com profile] d_tepes)

"I can’t believe the news today//I can’t close my eyes and make it go away" - U2, Sunday, Bloody Sunday (identified by [livejournal.com profile] raptor_au)

"Another soldier//says he’s not afraid to die//(I am scared, I’m so scared)"

"my heart can’t possibly break//when it wasn’t even whole to start with"

"you burn like//a bouncing cigarette//on the road"

"you know you own my body but don’t think that you control my mouth" [livejournal.com profile] engelsteorra knows this one but since she told me the answer rather than posting it, I'm leaving it blank for others to guess. :)

"in the night of matter//black flowers blossom//feathers on my breath//black flowers blossom"

"first you make me move//until I'm so damn close//take me back again, oh take me back again" Wet Wet Wet, Temptation (identified by [livejournal.com profile] smileawhile)

"they're closing down another road//one way system steals the show//Mac the Knife swigs a can and sings the day away"

yeah, um, eclectic probably covers that!

Um, have you tried looking for a tool to do that?

If you look for file rename tools at Sourceforge, you might find something...

I had a quick look last night but everything I found wouldn't let me do the zeroes at the start of the numbers. I didn't check Sourceforge though - will head over there at break. Thanks!

I made a small search there and I found a few tools that might fix your problem. I'm just not sure on how "advanced" you need to be to use them, since they use fairly complicated techniques (Perl regexps and the like).

Dunno.

I've found one that has definite potential - depending on how it handles the four digit numbering system I'm using. Unfortunately since I'm at work I can't try it yet - I'll let you know if/how it works!

Thanks again!

try a wee google search... I tried and a few things came up, if you check the groups page on a search for 'rename a large amount of files' There was a suggestion for how to do it using PSP if you have access to that. No idea how well it works though.

Well I must be over my sad affliction as the second last lyric I knew I knew really well, but it had me stumped!!!! :O One of my favourite tunes too..... Wets Temptation of course..... ahh Gimmee Gimmee

I'm all intrigued now by the PSP suggestion. I might have a hunt and see if there's anything in the PS support that might do it!

And yup - wanna know what version of Temptation I've been listening to? The live version from the All Around and In The Crowd tour on the last night in Glasgow. So I'm actually listening to us in there as well!

"Gimmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!"

*g*

Bah. The only one which I can pick is #3, which is of course Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2. One of my favourite songs, you have excellent taste :D

I'm sorry, I don't know a fix for your renaming troubles, I've had the same problem myself. I'll ask a tech-friend and see what he says, but if you find out, let me know.

That's the one! One of my all time favourite U2 songs it has to be said!

And thanks! JG has pointed me towards some downloadable tools on SourceForge but it'll be a few hours before I can try them out to see if they work.

Sadly, I have no help or advice.

I can, however, name the second song as "Brake Of Your Car" by Lennon. :)

Oh, if you haven't found a copy to buy or download, I can hook you up with her album "I Am" which is so hard to find. I obsessively tracked it down so I could be a completest. :)

'tis indeed!

And you are so right, it's nigh on impossible to find "I Am"! That would be fantabulous if you don't mind?
[identity profile] d-tepes.livejournal.com on April 28th, 2006 04:00 pm (UTC)
It's not a problem at all. In fact, I have other things than just "I Am." I figure, and think I recall, that you already have "5:30 Saturday Morning" and "Career Suicide" but if not I can up them too.

I have "I Am" and "Beyond Warped" which has 2 live songs and some songs that I think are going to be on her new album out later this year. I have the demo songs she had up on her website and I also have a few alternate versions, interviews and live songs.

Something I got from a local station is her doing "My Beautiful" acoustically... but to guitar instead of piano. It's awesome. Let me know which ones you want and I'll put 'em in a .zip and hit YouSendIt. :)

But I was going to post my answer!

I feel gypped. *pout*
