The sites
Okay, decision time. Do I stay with my current webhost who are charging me £98 per annum (and which is due in the next three weeks), or do I move webhost to somewhere else which might cost more but won't be so susceptable to blocking me out of my own file manager and deleting my email accounts without warning? (And who might also be able to give me tech support in the english language...)

I need access to MySQL databases, I need a lot of bandwidth allowance and I could do with a fair whack of storage space.

I've been looking at DreamHost. It's a possibility - any negatives I should be aware of with them (other than the additional costs)?

Or - and I already know what most of you are going to say here, but seriously a hundred quid would pay for the new oil sump my car needs - do I give up the sites altogether?

ETA I'm taking a half-day today so I'm not ignoring you if you answer this, honest!

... I've actually just checked out Dreamhost again and they've got a special offer on. If I can pay two years in advance plus a set up fee then I get a pretty sweet package. Trouble is... I would need to get £250. I don't have it. I'm not likely to have it this year. The more I think about this, the more I think I should give up the sites because I just can't afford it right now.

My bunch are pretty good. And even their most expensive package (5GB disk space, 12GB transfer, 50 SQL databases) is only £2 more than you're paying now.

And the support is fantastic - totally on the ball and able to fix things. They had a few problems about nine months back, when transferring to new servers, but they've been solid ever since.

I swear by Dreamhost. I use them for all my sites, including the traffic-heavy Winchester-Journals and I'm not even *close* to using my bandwidth or space.

If you want to use my referral code (winchester), you can even have a free domain registration :)

Seriously though, they do have occasional server issues, but in my opinion, so do all webhosts. And the difference is that they keep you updated. And their tech support is fantastic.....

I pay monthly and it works out at about £5 a month. Almost nothing!

Hope that helps.

GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com) have what look like quite attractive hosting offers. I can't vouch for them because I only use them for the purchase of my domain name, not for hosting also. But the prices look quite reasonable as I recall from when I was renewing my domains last month.

I'm a big fan of dreamhost, although I've not put them through their paces particularly. You would get some money off if I gave you a referral (which I'd be delighted to do). BUT I think, tbh, that it's not something you need to be spending money on at the moment.

Back the sites up, offer them to other people to see if there's anyone who might be interested in paying for and running them, and if no one takes you up on it, close them. If they're backed up and someone then decides they can't live without them it'll be relatively easy to sort out :)

You seem to have had more stress than joy out of the sites recently, and that balance is only going to slip further if you keep thinking "I should have fixed the car".

I can give you a subdomain for your own stuff quite happily (and would be delighted to do so) I've got the space and the bandwidth for that :)

It's sad, but from what I know of your financial situation you're better off without the sites.

OTOH, you'll be losing a big part of your hobby, a part that for the most part has been bringing you joy.

But you know, fandom doesn't put food on the plate or fix your car. It'll be a shame if the sites go away, but it'll be worse if you have financial problems you could have avoided.
