Dreamhost - why are you doing this to me?!!
First you tell me I can't transfer a .co.uk domain which means it's going to take longer than I expected because I need to register a whole new domain which means the URL's gonna change.

Second, your 'wiki' support site says I can pay by PayPal which is one of the main reasons my credit/debit cardless self chose you. So why are you now telling me in the payment page that you're only taking credit cards via Google check-out or cheques/money orders. So because I don't have a credit card I'm going to have to get a banker's draft or money order - either of which will cost me another £18.

Third, you tell me that if I pay by cheque or money order then you won't even start the process until you've received payment which means the registration will take even longer because hey, sending overseas takes time.

GNNNH!!!

So yeah, my slightly optimistic comment that the site shouldn't be offline for too long was a little... wrong.

ETA okay now I'm confused. Is a Money Order the same as a Postal Order? I phoned my bank and they say there's an £18 charge for a banker's cheque, I checked the post office site and there's an £18 charge for an 'international money transfer' but then there's the mention of the Postal Order and it's an £8.something charge. Is that a money order?

Okay, I went down to my bank there and have ordered a foreign currency draft. It'll be sent out to me in seven days. I then have to send it to the US and it could take a couple of weeks to get there. Then they have to start the registration process etc so it's looking like the sites will be offline for the whole of September at this rate. Sorry.

It might be worth contacting support about both of those - I know I did have the option to pay by paypal, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't. I know it's a bit early for them to be up, but they're pretty fast.

I think it's the changeover to google checkout really, I didn't actually think about contacting them. Hmm. Smart thinking Batman!

See, it's not just my sparkling wit that makes me worth keeping around.

Google bloody checkout. I'm a googlegirl all the way, but it's pish.

Wow.

I just contacted them as soon as you suggested it and I have a reply already.

Dude, their customer support rocks!

They no longer take PayPal for the first payment, but they will take it for renewals and other charges. Money order it is then (Post Office still sells 'em, right?)

Post office does still sell them, but your bank might be cheaper with the different currency.

Their customer support is fantastic - did you ask about the co.uk domain transfer? It seems a bit wierd that they wouldn't support that.

I've just read your eta - the £8 postal order will be in GB£, a currency one might be an entirely different charge.

I'm now even more confused to be honest - I've been googling International Money Order and it looks like they're not available in the UK, but that must be wrong surely...

I could just call the Post Office support line but that would be sensible...

I think I'll wait until everything's set up before I ask about the .co.uk thing. I've gone for the same domain name but with .org and hopefully I can maybe keep my .co.uk names with a different registrar and just point the nameservers to the DH one. Not 100% sure how that will work with linking but I guess I'll see in time.

they should certainly be able to help you through aliasing, it's been a LONG time since I've done it, but it was really simple 5..6 years ago, so I can't imagine that it's got any harder :).

I had a quick look at Martin's site to see what he reccommended, and it looks like you're probably talking about around a £15 charge on the currency change no matter what, which is a pain in the arse, but yeah, I'd give the post office a buzz and ask... :) Might also be worht giving your bank a ring, some are cheaper at international transfers than others.

I am so confused right now. Postal orders can't be cashed in the US, I can't find any mention of a money order on the PostOffice site, I can find mention of a MoneyGram but not whether I'd need bank details for that or what...

My head hurts...

*pets your brain*

Call them, I think that'll be easier. The post office site is terrible (and also generally not very well updated)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on August 31st, 2007 11:49 am (UTC)
Post office can only do it by telgraphing the money there which means someone at the other end would have to go physically pick it up. So I've ordered a banker's draft instead.

The level of complication is crazy, but... at least the follow up payments can be paypalled I suppose (and you can add a donation button to the site that goes to credit your dreamhost account only, I believe, so that'll be easier next time it comes up).

It's nuts. Having to 'apply' for the banker's draft just because it's in furrin money seems completely insane to me. It'll be a week before I get it (I'm hoping she means 7 calendar days and not working days...) and then I have to send it out to the US?

Grrr.
