Yes, something else I've been toying with doing...
There are so many fantastic Faith-centric fics out there that I don't see getting all that much recognition so...

[Poll #1417588]

A reassurance - I already run two awards sites, I already have the coding, it reeally isn't that much extra work for me. Also? I kinda thrive on what little stress in involved.

eta dammit! I knew there was a question I missed on the poll and you can't edit LJ polls so in comments please:

Should it be judged or public vote?

replying to my own post may seem strange, but on the other hand, this is me we're talking about here!

My preference would be to have it popular choice, although there is slightly more... credence? if it were to be judged.

At our first round of [livejournal.com profile] absence_oflight, we had judges for each category, awarding 1-3 places, depending on the number of nominees in the category, then also had a 'fan favorite' which was popular vote. And really, if you use GoogleDocs, Pop Vote is about as easy as Pie, plus you have the judging side that IMHO does have more credence, simply because the person judging (is supposed to) actually READ all the entries, which 99% of people who do pop vote don't do. It was very interesting to see where the pop vote and judges agreed (and disagreed).

You could also do the opposite - pop vote, then have a Judge's Choice for each category or some such.

That said, if I have to choose, I go Judged, ALL THE WAY.

[livejournal.com profile] princess_dushku had an interesting alternative down in the comments - a way of combining the voting option and a judged. I think I would be more tempted to seperate the options though - have it both be judged and popular choice.

Thanks!

I'd say perhaps the option of judged and popular opinion? Two classes of awards? (Like BOTB at AVA)

I have no experience of judging fic so I wouldn't know how feasable that would be.

Plus ticky box my favourite Faith quote 'Just like riding a Biker!!' (Private gag that you may appreciate)
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on June 19th, 2009 02:19 pm (UTC)
Entirely feasable, the only real problem I had judging the Salt & Burn Awards was getting the results back from the other judges in the format I needed to calculate the winner - but that was my own fault for not giving them the proper guidelines in the first place.

Hee! I love that quote too, and yup, how does J react to that?

I'd say he thought it was most entertaining - and even more impressed when Echo rides a Ducati in Dollhouse :)

Men and their bikes - it's a lurve thing.

Oh man... that Ducati? Was a thing of beauty!

Expensive too ....

I'm just dipping my toes into Faith fanfiction - so I'll be happy with any option as long as it gives me a chance to find interesting fics to read.

Awesome!

Not being a Faith person, I'm really not qualified to opine, though I do think it's probably a fine idea.

See, I wonder about that too - I know there is a fair sized part of fandom that doesn't like her at all. I think there might be enough support to trial out a round though.

That's funny, because everyone I know but me thinks she's awesome. So I do think there will be enough support.

Judged is always better than public votes, but that's just my own opinion, sweetie.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on June 19th, 2009 02:23 pm (UTC)
Thanks honey! I agree - there is more kudos attached to having a 'judged' award as a writer because you know there's at least some attempt at judging quality as opposed to how many people someone has on their flist.

I think at this rate I'll be going ahead with a trial round, and probably have the option [livejournal.com profile] thedothatgirl mentioned up above in the comments - both popular choice and judged, so each category would have to winners.

That's what we do for the Bronze summer fic contest.

Could there be two rounds to it- everyone nominates, public vote for top 5, judges choose from that shortlist?
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on June 19th, 2009 02:23 pm (UTC)
That's actually an option I hadn't thought about - it's definitely worth looking into. Thanks!

Linked here by [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies.

I agree that it should be some sort of combo of judging and pop vote, because they're both nice to have. There's Snowy's AoL method, where everything gets judged and voted on, there's Snowy's KGA method of mostly judging and then voting on one's that got multiple noms for a Voter's Choice category, there's the method of voting and then judging the top ones, or judging and then voting amongst the winners...

Personally, I'd go for a method that involves more judging than voting, because so much of the time with voting it's just scanning the list and seeing what names you recognize, and then voting for your favorite authors without reading the rest of the fics. But pop vote is good to have so there's input.

Also? If you do have judging, I'm a whore for judging, so like PM me or something if that happens.
[identity profile] whiskyinmind.livejournal.com on June 20th, 2009 01:55 pm (UTC)
Definitely looks as though I'll be running it a hybrid. Perhaps with judging for all categories and a popular vote for general ones like 'Best Overall Fic' in which all nominees are included.

I'm a whore for judging, so like PM me or something if that happens.

That would be awesome! I'm currently in the nominations stage of the White Knight Awards (Xander - popular vote) and am committed to running the Salt & Burn Awards (Supernatural - judged) in July/August so it will probably be August or maybe even into September before this goes ahead. Thank you so much for the offer!

Yeah, sounds like a good plan.
